Indoor Lighting Tips – How to Decorate Your Home with LEDs?

Lighting design has a major part of the atmosphere created in your home, office or business, so a crucial factor of the interior designs of any space. Let that be a cosy atmosphere you want to achieve in your apartment or a cool, modern look in your business or office; lighting can accelerate or tune down its effects both during the day and night. The amount of natural is determined not only by the size of the windows of the room, but also their height on the wall, the siting of the building or the wall of the window in particular, and also the environment and the climate of the building. Tall trees in front of the window will obviously block natural sunlight to get in, while windows facing north will also allow little light into the room. Where natural light is not accessible, or maybe even avoided because of the heat it also draws in, artificial lighting is our main source of creating moods and impressions in our rooms. There are two basic forms of lighting in any space we can talk about: functional lighting and decoration ones. Both bear their own significance, especially in businesses, where decoration can be part of the image the business creates as well as a customer attracting tool. Even if you need to focus on functional lighting at first while furnishing your space, using energy-saving devices is an important guideline you should keep for the sake of saving energy and money as well on the long run. LED lights are not only the cheapest lighting solution available on the market but also come with a wide range of lighting solutions, fittings, colours and brightness So if you are looking to install lighting in your home that are both functional, decor and cheap running, then LED lights are the best choice for you. If you are afraid how this new technology will fit into your regular lights, or how you can harmonize these solutions with your already selected chandeliers and lamps, you will be happy to hear that LED light bulbs come with standard fittings, and almost all lights can be replaced by these eco-friendly and highly energy-saving constructions. Since the market is over flood with lighting solutions, fixtures and designs, it is good to know some guidelines that will help you in your choice of light or installation. For general – functional lighting all rooms need to have a decent ceiling fixture providing enough light for any activity within the space. For a living room for instance, where high brightness is not always necessary, but space is usually large, it is advised to use dimmable LED lights, or simply use several circuits in your lighting system, and control sections of it from separate switches. The decoration of walls can happen with spotlights guiding attention to sculptures, mouldings, pictures on the wall, or any form of art work even a plant within the room. Ambient lighting, or simply having an LED strip light running around the room as supporting lighting can be turned into decoration – an RGB strip light, displaying several colours can always change the mood of your room and its habitants as well. This form of decoration is especially common for restaurants and other businesses within the hospitality industry. A chandelier or pendant fixtures usually light up the ceiling, so their light is partially functional and decor, since an illuminated ceiling gives a brighter impression of the room, but has no function whenever we want to do something in the room. For ceilings, downlighters can be somewhat better solutions, as all light is emitted downwards, but illuminates even the very top of the room too. Recessed downlighters are best solutions for low ceiling rooms, where the room does not need to be decorated.
Other functional lights are the vanity lights in bathrooms or in bedrooms above the mirror, for applying cosmetics. Spotlights illuminating the mirror from both edges can avoid shades on the face. Under cabinet lights usually require diffused light for the worktop. An ideal solution could be an LED strip light with a high – around 12W – performance. LED strip lights are ideal for evenly illuminating a larger area of the worktop and also emit a diffused light.

Flower Floor Lamp

How To Creatively Decorate Using Floor Lamps

When it comes to setting the mood or atmosphere in a room, not only does proper illumination add to the allure of your personal space, but also the sources of light. While table lamps and ceiling lights serve a functional purpose, floor lamps are expansive in the many different ways one may decorate their space and showcase their creativity. Whether you choose an antique selection to brighten your den or side with a traditional Victorian fringe design for the bedroom, the never-ending possibilities of a floor lamp shine through in the mind-boggling variety in choices.

Antique Lamps

There is a certain elegance and intrigue associated with displaying an antique floor lamp. In home design, the mystery and unknown past of such an item is enough to spark the imagination, as well as provide a delightful conversation topic when family and friends visit. Today, there are manufacturers that strive to recreate this very look by emulating flowery, ornamental approaches towards antique furniture, which allows homeowners to match their lighting sources with other elements of their décor.

A few common features of antique lamps include the stained-glass lampshade, brass finishes, and intricate designs. When one is interested in truly decorating their home with antique floor lamps, genuine specimens may cost quite a bit, such as French antique lamps carrying a price tag of more than thousands of dollars. Usually, an antique or antique-styled floor lamp is selected because of its look and fit within a setting, rather than bringing light into the room.

One-of-a-Kind Pieces

Floor lamps are also known to serve as a work of art, as some artists fashion one-of-a-kind pieces that sometimes depict odd, creative, or unusual displays. Some of the unique possibilities of artsy floor lamps include planetary designs, sculpted wooden figures, wild animals, and abstract images. Artistic floor lamps may also use unusual objects to construct the base of the lamp, such as animal antlers, petrified wood, branches, or heat-treated metal. They may rise in the air like an ivory torch or bring the look and feel of fantasy with fairies decorating their base.

Some floor lamps are fashioned with a specific art movement in mind, such as colorful Art Deco pieces. Artists may also hand craft their samples and hand paint customized detailing on the outside of the shade to add characteristic touches for home and/or office use.

Regional Flair

Floor lamps are sometimes used to represent or pay homage to regional pride, as seen in Southwestern selections showcasing characteristic elements added to a lamp, such as images of cacti and rattlesnakes. A New York City-themed floor lamp may showcase a silhouette of the Empire State Building. Cozy wilderness scenes of Colorado and other rustic locations may utilize the image of wild critters, such as the grizzly bear or bald eagle.

Create a Mood

Floor lamps allow individuals to create a mood within their home or office that becomes the focus of the space when one enters the room. A gateway to the past may come alive with a Victorian-style street lamp displaying the soft, burnt orange glow of a custom crafted glass lampshade. Perhaps, the theme of your living room is Oriental – a solid hardwood floor lamp with a Chinese raw lacquer finish with mother of pearl and metal chrome accents will fit into the décor. Color also helps create a mood, such as the vibrant shades of red in Asian-style floor lamps.

Mix and Match Color Bulbs to Match Lampshades

The unique part of purchasing a floor lamp is that you may change lampshades to the base of your favorite lamp, just as you can match different colored light bulbs to create varying effects within a room. Depending on the time of day and other outside factors, various lampshade colors transform light into an array of shades, but red, blue, green, and even yellow lights can establish the atmosphere into a controlled setting, such as a romantic environment to a room set aside for contemplation, withdrawal, or reflection.

In conclusion, the many uses and décor ideas regarding floor lamps are quite vast, as homeowners may choose from a host of inviting and exciting selections on the market. Today, an assortment of contemporary, traditional, hip, artisan, and antique lamps expand the possibilities of floor lamp interior design.

  2. QUESTION:
Why do dogs hide their bones?
I have an 8 month old Shitzu-Papillion. We get him these bone-like things filled with meat in the centre. Whenever he gets one, he picks it up and wanders around the house whining and crying until he finds a good enough hiding spot for it (ex. flower pot, laundry basket, behind some floor lamps, etc). It’s pretty funny but I’d like to know why he does this. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
My dog does the same thing. Usually if she’s already eaten and someone gives her something like a bone or some treats, she’ll try to hide them and I notice that a few hours later or maybe even the next day she’ll go back to the spot she hid them and eat it.
So I’d say that they hide them because they don’t want it at the moment but know they might want it later.

  3. QUESTION:
Can I borrow your opinion on my room?
    My plans are listed below.

Bed: Black metal arm futon with black mattress. Teal and lime throw blanket with lots of pillows. Black frame with teal cushion rocking ottoman.

Chair: Black arms and legs teal cushion. Lime toss pillow. Teal footstool that matches chair.

Tv stand: Teal vase with tropical (hawaiian) flowers. Silver and black bendable floor lamp beside stand. my oak jewlery box and dvds. Stone flowers (lime leaves blue flower) as book ends for dvds.

Walls: THE FUN PART. Lime walls with a teal line with a black line inside the teal. Teal curtains. black picture frames with pictures of Hawaii in them. The pictures of one I’ve taken.

The theme is Hawaiian as we just moved to North Carolina last week from Hawaii. I really miss it here and I’ve never seen such a boring town. Our house has all white walls and NO personality. I have to get some carpet since it’s ugly green.

    • ANSWER:
Sounds wonderful and very dramatic, maybe punch it up a little with bright orange in accents, like a black vase of Bird of Paradise or with pillows or a rug.

  4. QUESTION:

  5. QUESTION:
14 year old bredroom decor ideas?
i already have a bed and a huge flower lamp a night stand a drawer and a desk that came with like shelves thats now are on the floor but what ev about that my room is pretty small but i want to decorate it more my room is blue and green and i have those beady curtains what else can i buy to make my room more fun and fashionable

    • ANSWER:
In a blue and green room, I would go for a really fun earthy feel. Hang a birdhouse from your ceiling (which i know sounds weird, but if you get one that’s kind of made out of sticks and fake moss instead of the classic birdhouse it looks good), or get one of those princess bed overhangings, thats like the white mesh you know? and buy some fake flowers from walmart and just have fun spicing up your room with a few flowers (that never die! huge plus!) or a flower wreath.
My ideas might sound silly in theory but i have done a room like this, and it was gorgeous and the perfect little haven.

Lightolier

Chandeliers – A Lighting Option You Should Consider

Lighting makes a room. As a quick rule, the more lights or lighting options the better. A chandelier in the center of a ceiling should be one of the options you install if you are doing any room makeover.

Chandeliers were originally designed to hold lots of candles and give a central light in a room. An electric light bulb achieves this more simply. Chandeliers now are decorative objects in their own right.

The effect of a chandelier with lots of light bulbs in a room is stunning. A modern chandelier gives a real touch of class to your décor and it makes a wonderful centrepiece. There are various types and costs associated with them.

A crystal chandelier, assuming you love lead crystal, really is a thing of beauty. The pieces of crystal arranged around the light bulbs refract the light from the bulbs and appear in a rainbow of different colors. You must use clear glass bulbs though. The commonly used opaque bulbs diffuse the bright light source of the bulbs’ hot filaments, so you won’t get any sharp refractions to speak of, no bright colors.

Chandeliers are meant to be brightly lit and should not be combined with dimmer switches.

Antique chandeliers may be in brass and are extremely heavy, modern ones are heavy enough. Installing a chandelier is a job for the professional. Your installer will use winches and pulleys to raise the chandelier to ceiling height before attaching it to a strong fixing point. He will not just hang it over a screw on a crossbeam, but will ensure that it will stay up for ever.

There are other types of chandelier, some of which are more suited to wall mounting, like the ones made from deer antlers.

You can find chandeliers at antique dealers and auctions as well as lighting retailers and the ubiquitous EBay.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is there a cheaper alternative to replacing a Lightolier 9173bbk track light?
We wanted to add two more lights to our kitchen, as it’s a little too dark for our taste, but these lights are like 5 online for one…is there something cheaper that will work with the same track system?

    • ANSWER:
i would just replace the whole light unit. I have seen many at menards and home depot for much less than 5. If 1 track light system is not enough, consider adding more light fixtures throughout the room.

  2. QUESTION:
what is a good book to get information on a gerald thurston lamp by lightolier?

    • ANSWER:
well I know barns and nobles has pretty much everything…

  3. QUESTION:
Looking for info about what lights ie Low Voltage, Lightolier, etc to light a clothing store?
space is about 25 x 25 with a sky light in the middle.
Want a really good track light system and some additional indirect light.
Looking for ideas or any advice.
    thanks
    m

    • ANSWER:
For proper color rendition in a clothing store, you should use incandescents.

Contact an electrical contractor or a lighting distributor (not retailer). Sometimes they will do the design for you for the profit on the sale of the fixtures. You’ll need a contractor for installation, anyhow.

  4. QUESTION:
Electricians: Who stocks Lightolier recessed trims for 3 3/4″ incandescent cans?
I have a job that’s 1 1/2 away from home, and it had a lot of these cans throughout the unit, but in one location the builder missed a can, and left it covered up by drywall. So now I need to find a matching trim. If you’re unfamiliar, Lightolier cans are part of the trim, and connect to the socket, so no other brand or type of trim would work in it’s place. I really need to get a hold of one tomorrow morning and don’t know who carries them in stock, and the internet has not been very helpful, as all the suppliers I know of fail to list their products… thanks.

    • ANSWER:
      Try:

      http://www.esources.co.uk/search-suppliers/incandescent-cans/

      Or:

      http://www.esources.co.uk/wholesale-suppliers/140/

You will find all the verified incandescent cans suppliers you need there.

Best wishes to you and your business.
