Abstract
Solar powered lightening system is becoming popular in remote isolated Indian villages. The design and construction principle of a solar lamp is presented in this paper. It investigates the performance characteristic of the proposed system. The paper also presents the comparison of the proposed solar lantern with conventional lightening systems, hurricane lantern and candle, in terms of cost and performance. The Impact of these systems in the life of the Indian villagers has been reflected in terms of parameters like employment generation, their educational and economic status etc.
Introduction
Lightening is essentially required for a human being in his living place wherever it might be. There are places in remote Indian villages where grid supply is not possible due to technical and economic reasons . An alternative source of lightening may be used in such isolated remote areas. The operation of alternative source should not be sophisticated one so that rural people can easily operate. In the present study solar lamp has been used to meet the lightening system requirement of these remote villages. The constructional features and performance characteristic of the new proposed solar lamp has been presented .The comparison between new proposed lamp with other conventional lightening system, hurricane lamps and candle is also presented in terms of construction, performance characteristic and cost [1,2,3 ].
Conventional sources of lightening
The conventional sources of lightening used in a rural home are usually of two types:
i) Hurricane
ii) Candle
The hurricane lantern is made of steel. It has a reservoir/tank of fuel. The usual fuel is kerosene. The flame is produced by firing a cotton feather, which absorb kerosene from the fuel tank. The flame is covered by a tubular glass. The life of these lamps are 5 years
A candle is made of wax. It provides light for 20 hour or more depending on the size of candle. In the present study a candle of 25 cm height and 5 cm diameter has been used which give light for 20 hours.
Technology of Solar Lantern
Solar lamp consists of following components/modules as shown in Fig (1)
PV module 3W/10W – 6V/12V
Battery 4.5/7.5AH
Power Converter 230V,10W
Lamp (LEDS) 10W
Intelligent Controller
The source of the energy of the proposed lantern is the DC electricity produced by a solar panel during insolation period. The energy is stored in a battery which supplies power to lamp (LEDS) working as a load.
A voltage regulator circuit controls the charging of the battery. The low voltage protection circuit is incorporated to prevent the battery from deep discharging (SOC=50%)
An inverter circuit converts DC voltage to sinusoidal PWM AC waveforms with 95 % efficiency and THD less than 2%.
The unique feature of the innovative intelligent solar lamp is its controlled delivery of power through intelligent action of the control switches to regulate the intensity of lamps as per requirement

Cost Analysis of Different Lamps
The cost of solar lantern include the cost of different accessories which include Voltage Control Unit, Low voltage protection Circuit , Inverter LEDS, Casing and SMF Battery etc. In the cost analysis of hurricane lamp its life time is considered as 5 year. The consumption of kerosene is 40 ml per hour and is used for 4 hour a day for lightening purpose. The cost of candle is also evaluated considering 4 hours of illumination each day.

It depends no the type and name brand! Most of them ask that you turn it off for the first day to leave it charge and the the next day turn it on and then it should work that night and keep working with out being touched for months. If you have cheap solar light then you more than likely will need to keep it in some place were it can get sun everyday, as most need direct or indirect sunlight to keep charged and working. They say you should replace the solar batteries once a year but most people don’t do that! Good luck.

Are High Output solar lights worth the extra money?
I am looking at this set: Westinghouse Solar Utopia High-Output Spot Light Set, 2-Piece at Walmart (I know, evil me). But they are for two vs for normal ones. I am really hoping these are totally worth the money because I will be using them to illuminate a flag pole (I am a stickler about flag lighting out of respect for those that deserve it). Yes, most definately. I had this same problem about “High Output” solar lights. But, I decided to take a chance and go for it. They seem to be a whole lot better than the standard solar lights I use to have. I definately feel like I got my money’s worth on this one.

it will preserve them fairly well,for now, but in the long run they would be permanantly damaged. they may lose their value(if any). They do make decoupage in matt finish that looks lovely for old items.In my opinion, if they are not Valuable then go for it. If they are you would need the advice of a professional.Second thought: only other thing is that the color on your back page may leak to the front, try on a new news papaer first. Best wishes!As time passes decoupage degrades and becomes brittle. It will not be something that will last for a long priod of time perhaps a few years under the right conditions. Particularly if you plan to use it on canvas if the the piece could become brittle and crack. I know this from experience. I have worked with decoupage on many projects over the years. Not with news paper but many tissue papers and fine linen paper.
Edit: you can buy glass that is not shiny but stilll clear please search out this option also,before damaging your items.

What you would need to do is replace the original ballast in each one with a 120 volt ballast that has the same wattage rating as the lamps. Look up the manufacturer’s site for a ballast and see what they have in 120 volts. I am guessing if the fixtures are really good ones it will pay to try a mod of one to see if that will be economical and practical. If they were just cheap fixtures the ballast cost might be worse than just dumping those and buying new 120V ones.The alternative is to sell those 277 volt ones on eBay and use the money for new 120V ones.

Fluorescent fixtures work just fine on 110V AC. One warning in an unheated garage though. In the winter they will take quite awhile to come up to full brightness – a couple of minutes.

yes any flourescent will work for growing plants indoors according to Martha Stewart, she spoke about that topic on her show as a money saving tip not long ago. I have a ivy type hanging plant in my living room, I changed out all of my light bulbs to the compact flourescent bulbs and the ivy is doing great with them for the last couple of years. I never set it out in the sun.

Personally i also have mid distance track spikes and i run the 200 the 400 and pole vault. The main difference between the spikes will be sprinter spikes will help force you to run on your toes, but if you already do that you should be fine jumping in mid distance :] p.s. this would not work for high jump

No such thing as indoor spikes. They are all made for rubber tracks usually unless cross country. I dont know what event you do so its kinda hard to say which ones. some suggestions are nike zoom superflys are pretty good for sprinting. Saucony endorphin for long distance or even middle. I’ve always been very near sighted and have a considerable stigmatism in both eyes. My first bifocals were at 25, but switched back since they no longer work as well for me. New dr. says it’s nearsighted but also because the receptor cells (we all have rods and cones in our eyes to distinguish light/dark/color shapes) are spread too far apart. I’m corrected at 20/40, but closer to 20/50 now. Bye bye night driving!He wasn’t terribly helpful in what to do, other than get a hand held magnifier, so that I can keep up with my course work. Any tips/tricks or things to ask for so I can keep up with all this college work?? Reading a couple of hundred pages each night and working on this computer was a challenge last term; it’s getting harder and harder to do this. So, what’s a book loving girl to do??

I’m not sure you’re looking at this ‘right’. I may not be either as there are so many ways to work through this.Basically, the way the lens thing works is, the more powerful the lens, the more it bends light. The formula where the Power of the lens or P is equal to 1/d where d is in meters helps.
If a lens is focused at a meter away, +1
half meter, +2
third of a meter, +3
quarter of a meter, +4
fifth of a meter, +5bonk…. sorry, hit my head on the computer….
If you are “near sighted” then you are already focused closer than infinity or far away. If you are focused at a meter away, you are +1 too powerful and need to use a -1.00 to neutralize that power or move the focal point out to distance.
If you are a -2.00 myope you are focused +2.00 too powerful or a half meter away… etc etc etc.
When ‘reading’, one should try and get a lens that allows you to see at the distance you are doing the work. But if you are already near sighted, then you may not ‘need’ a lens. Just take off your glasses. But if you use your distance glasses, then read, you’ll need to move that distance focal point up to reading distance.
Most of us read at a little further away than a third of a meter. So the +2.50 or +2.75 lens or add to our distance lens works great. One MIGHT want a little depth of focus, so optometrists will measure your ability to focus close,…. for instance if you move your finger closer and closer till you can’t see the fingerprint anymore, that’s your “near point”. If that is for instance a quarter of a meter, then the optometrist will recommend that you get an add of about +2.00 which is half the +4.00 of your ability. That’s how the thinking goes.
A computer is about maybe a +2.00 distance or half meter away, or thereabouts. figure it out for yourself, and try the plus lenses at the drug store for testing which reading Rx is good for you. You can figure it out so you don’t get fatigued.
Now the real problem is that if you have astigmatism, you should use your distance Rx which corrects for that, then move that distance focal point closer to the distance you want to read. That way you won’t be fighting the astigmatism distances or circle of least confusion blur, etc.
If you really have problems, go to a good Optometrist. This is what they are trained to DO, figure out these optical problems so that you can see well, without fatigue or other asthenopic symptoms. It’s worth the $ to get the right Rx.

I had a corneal problem since I born, I’m not sure of the scientific name , and since my case is previously operated successfully elsewhere where I cannot get back to my original doctors (foreign country). currently I’m in different country, so I would like if someone can guess from experience my original illness, here is the details:1-I born with it.
2-I had two siblings have the same problem, so we are 3 out of 4 siblings have the problem, we don’t know of anyone in our family and near or far relatives except us who have that problem.
3-Probably astromal recessive case, my parents are near related.4-During the illness time since I born, my eye looks blue from outside, the cornea part looks blue.
5-My vision got worse due to the cornea getting worse over time, so when I was up to 10 years old I can see the class board and read without help, after 11 years old I started to use strong magnifier to read, after 15 yrs old I can barely see , but I used stronger magnifier for reading.6-I didn’t feel pain, only after 15, becomes sensitive to light, or any tiny hit. but not continuously painful.
I searched on the net, I found Corneal Heridtary endothelial dystrophy type 2 (CHED2) that have closer syptoms to mine… but I’m not sure… I remember my parents were told it was a very rare illness.
I already had corneal transplants when I was 18.
