QUESTION:
How do I rewire an old fluorescent desk lamp?
I have an antique fluorescent desk lamp. I bought it as a kind of “basket case” because someone had yanked the power cord out of it and it pulled a lot of the wiring apart inside. I want to put new wires in and start using it.It has just 2 wire colors, white and black. It has a ballast with just 2 wires (both black). The lamp holds a regular 2-pin (at each end) straight tube.
The switch to turn on and off has 4 wires coming out, one black and one white on each side.
Any clues? I think I know how to do this but I want to make sure.
Both wires coming out of the ballast are black. I wish it had a diagram on it like many of them do, but no such luck.No clue where the power leads went to, they were pulled totally out of the lamp. Then the other guy took it all apart, labeled some of the wires “B” “C” “D”, but that’s as far as he got.
-
ANSWER:
yea the do, but aslong as the wiring is 1.5mm then you’re good to go go go.if not, you’ll probably need new starters and all sorts.
quickets way is to buy a slightly larger new floro, and replace the parts into your old “basketcase” model.

QUESTION:
How to I Measure for a Lampshade?
I’ve got my grandmother’s antique desk lamps but no shades are with them. How do I measure for a fabric lamp shade?-
ANSWER:
Here’s what I found helpful:“For lamps without shades – The size lampshade must be proportional to the size of the lamp. We recommend that the height of the lampshade be 5/8 the length of the lamp. The bottom dimensions of the shade should be close to the height of the lamp but not to exceed the height of the lamp, or at least 2 1/2 times the width of the base. The harp can be changed to accommodate the appropriate size lampshade.
Please give us a call at 580-888-4476 or e-mail us for recommendations. Before calling, please measure from bottom of light socket to base of lamp for approx. height of lamp and from bottom of socket to top of harp (if there is an existing harp). Also diameter of widest part of lamp and a brief description of lamp. Keep measuring tape handy.”

QUESTION:
Shortly after my mom died, the antique lamp in my bedroom would turn on all by itself. But not lately, why?
The antique lamp, by the way, was a favorite lamp that belonged to my mother’s family when she was a little girl. I inherited it and it sets on a desk on the opposite wall. The lamp first turned on while I was sleeping during the day. I became so depressed after losing my mother, that I often went back to bed after getting the kids off to school and would not wake for 4-5 hrs. I had to keep the shades drawn for total darkness. The only thing that would make me get up was to turn a light on AND that’s exactly what my mother did. For another two years, the lamp would periodlically come on–sometimes all I had to do was ask aloud or just think about the lamp coming on and it would! But this all stopped and the light no longer comes on by itself. I miss it sooo much! It was very comforting to feel that my mother was still with me–if only in spirit. I wonder if others have had a similar experience and if, with time, the strength of a spirit slowly fades to no tangible activity.-
ANSWER:
My tv used to turn on and off and the car locks would lock themselves, strangely and obviously, musical toys would begin playing, someone tapping me on the back when I would be say diapering the kids. This was after my cousin died. (he had the same name as my youngest son) It all stopped after I had a ‘talk’ with my cousin. Weird!
The day after my dad died I was in the garage cleaning out a bird cage and my blue budgie flew away accidentally. I closed the garage.
Later that evening, my ex told me that he found the bird in the garage …that it never flew away.
When I went into the garage to catch my blue budgie….it was green!! A ‘GREEN’ budgie!
It wasnt my bird. Weird!!

QUESTION:
HOW TO IDENTIFY THE TYPE OF METAL THIS SCULPTURE IS MADE OF?
I HAVE AN ANTIQUE DESK LAMP THAT HAS A SCULPTURE AS THE BASE, IT IS SIGHNED,”copy a.moreau” IM TRYING TO IDENTIFY THE METAL TYPE OF SCULPTURE WITHOUT SCRATCHING IT, MAGNET DOES NOT ADHERE TO IT.-
ANSWER:
If it is yellow colored it is probably brass or plated with brass
If it is a dull silver, it is probably white metal, which is mostly zinc and makes detailed castings that are relatively low cost and moderate weight.
If you could free up the sculpture so you were not damaging the lamp parts, you could measure its volume by immersing it in a bucket full of water (on a string) so the water overflows – either capturing the water in a bigger tray and measuring or measuring cups of water to refill the container to total to the volume. Then a careful weighing will allow calculating the density which you can compare to brass, zinc, iron, aluminum, etc.
You may have to scratch in an obscure place. Depending on how it is built and or plated, a jeweler may be able to do a conductivity test and tell you.

Redecorating Your Child’s Room? Don’t Forget The Kids’ Desk
Redecorating a child’s room can be fun. You can play around a theme and spruce up the room with additional furniture to meet your child’s growing needs. Your child is growing up and he or she will need a kids’ desk, so don’t cross this out from the shopping list.
Small World
If a baby has a high chair, why can’t the older siblings have their own kids’ desk? Like the baby, they need furniture to go with their size. A kids’ desk with a matching chair will assure them that everything is all right in their little world.
Stepping into a child’s room is like stepping into another world. The brightly colored Lilliputian tables and chairs, beds, and organizers can transport one back to his or her magical childhood. This is a child’s world and everything should happily fit for his convenience.
Redecorating a child’s room
As the child grows the room also grows but retains that delightful charm. Redecorating a child’s room is a delightful task. You can plan the activity around your budget. Perhaps you may buy stuff one at a time and plunge into the redecorating full time during those brief weekends.
Children furniture stores offer a vast selection of kid-sized tables and chairs for different needs. If you are redecorating your child’s room, you can choose the right table to fit in, but select a kids’ desk that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday use. When children begin to explore the world around them, they take on new activities, especially when they start school. A kids’ desk where they can do their schoolwork and a child-sized computer table will set them up in the right direction.
Two kids in a pad
It takes a lot of creativity to redecorate the kids’ room. It is easier to plan for a child’s room, but if there are two kids in the pad, you have to discuss this with them because they may have different color and furniture preferences. Plan the redecorating with them and reach a compromise before starting anything. Show them the kids’ furniture online and discuss the salient features. They will appreciate this gesture and get into the planning actively. After all, it is their room.
For starters, get the appropriate sized kids’ table the siblings can work on. Place a bookshelf conveniently nearby. To complete the look, select pastels for girls and blues and reds for boys. Should they have a preferred color, however, work around it.
For the lighting system, install brighter illumination. A desk lamp for the kids’ table would be risky, but on the bedside table, this will do just fine. You can also add a dash of colorful rugs. If your children have allergies, use colorful play mats. They can also work on the floor if they need to.
Kids will require their own computer sets. If this is the case, you can free some space for the computer tables. Moms should not be flustered with the small space. A little creative thinking and some tricks will make the redecorating effort a success. And to think this started out with a kids’ desk.

Shopping Tips: Choosing Your Floor Lamp
Before you buy a floor lamp there are certain things that you might want to keep in mind. First of all you need to know that floor lamps were considered to be more dangerous than other lamps until the last decade or so when technology and good design helped fix some of the problems that made this style of lamp flawed in the first place.
For instance, historically, floor lamps have always been known to tip over. Nowadays there is a standard that contemporary floor lamps must meet call the UL “tipability” standard. This means that the floor lamp you are buying has a much heavier base and there is less danger of it falling over and landing, say, on a sofa cushion and setting it on fire.
Yet another feature of floor lamps that made them dangerous for years was the cords. The cords were made of cloth and easily caught fire with the slightest of power surges. Nowadays floor lamps are made with a plastic zip cord rather than the old cloth cords. The old cloth cords also used to fray and it was much easier for an animal or child to chew through them or get accidentally shocked just by touching it.
The fact that most antique lamps do not have a standardized non-tippable base or a safe electrical cord is why you are probably better off to buy a new floor lamp then one from an antique store. It is just safer.
Yet another reason is that the very old floor lamps attached their lampshades through a wire clamp that was attached to the shade itself. This style of clamp for attaching light bulbs is also obsolete.
However if you do find the floor lamp of your dreams there is no reason why you can’t take it to an electrician or antique dealer to see what can be done to refurbish it. This is done all of the time to recycle old floor lamps. It is probably a good idea not to try and rewire an old lamp yourself unless you
are an experienced electrician.
Although rewiring an old floor lamp is easy, making sure the base is stable is not. All it takes is one wild child or unruly dog to tip it over and you could have a fire on your hands.
Floor lamps come in an incredible number of styles nowadays including all of the retro looks that you would find in an antique store and all of the more contemporary styles. As you browse online to shop for floor lamps it is quite common to find them in every style imaginable including Mission, Seventies Retro, Tiffany, Art Deco, Arts and Crafts, Country, Late Victorian and Gas. You can also find modern Swedish
styles that include shades shaped like upside down frying pans and large metallic mixing bowls.
Nowadays floor lamps come in every type of finish and shade including glass, porcelain and brushed metal and there are some very unique, beautiful and interesting contemporary floor lamps, as well as the more traditional styles, around.

Install Commercial Photo Controls For Lighting To Beef Up Your Company’s Security
Every business building needs a substantial amount of light during night hours for security purposes. Commercial buildings such as plants or warehouses that cater to second or third shift workers need adequate lighting outdoors for employees as they enter and leave the building and parking lot or garage. But before you rush out to look for lighting solutions, consider installing commercial photo controls for better security and to save on costs.
Commercial Photo Controls Eliminate Hassle while Saving Energy
As a business owner, you might be tempted to install the first lights you find such as bright flood lights or wallpacks, which are small lights that hang flat against a building wall. These lights not only cause a lot of glare, but also waste much energy. You will likely need to turn them on and off manually, which can be a real hassle. Even with lights that are set on a timer, they’ll have to be reset for every seasonal change. The timer for lighting won’t always be synchronized with dawn and dusk, which wastes energy by the lights being left on during daylight hours.
Commercial photo controls differ in that the controls work by sensing natural light, and will turn on automatically when the sun goes down because of the lack of natural light. When the sun rises again in the morning, commercial photo controls will detect an increase of natural light, and will subsequently turn off automatically. This means that once you install commercial photo controls for lighting, you won’t have to worry about turning the lights on and off manually, or about setting a timer for the lights at every turn of the season.
Your business will save on energy costs by installing commercial photo controls because the lights will remain on only during night hours. Commercial photo controls also work with compact fluorescent light (CFL), which saves even more energy. Fluorescent photo controls will extend the life of bulbs, which can reduce lighting expenses for your business tremendously. CFL bulbs can fit into existing light fixtures, and they use less wattage for the same amount of lighting when compared with traditional incandescent lamps. CFL bulbs also last much longer so you won’t have to change your light bulbs as often.
Where to Install Commercial Photo Controls
Develop a lighting plan that maximizes security while providing adequate lighting for employees while entering or leaving the building. Even if your business doesn’t operate on second or third shifts, employees will need sufficient lighting when going out after first shift once Daylight Savings ends because it will get dark much earlier.
The lighting should be installed at every entrance/exit as well as each window to deter burglary. Burglars usually look for a dark window or door where they can easily access it without being seen. The photo control lighting needs to be out of reach so burglars can’t remove or destroy your fixtures. Also, add plenty of light throughout parking areas and walkways. Light up important signs as well as outdoor break areas for employees.
When installing lamps for parking areas or walkways, be sure to use shielded fixtures to prevent up-light and glare. Fixtures that are well shielded help you light a larger area because the light is cast downward and dispersed sideways so the light will not be wasted.
Before choosing a lighting system for your business building, be sure to shop online at reputable lighting companies such as Touch & Glow (R). Online lighting stores carry everything you need to install adequate lighting at affordable prices. You’ll also find other items such as touch lamps and touch lamp controls, light dimmers and switches, portable lights, holiday light controls, and other lighting products. Secure your business today with commercial photo controls!

How do I make my desk lamp less bright?
My desk lamp is too bright. I changed my 60 light bulb to a 40 light bulb and its still too bright. So I’m wondering they sell lamp shades I can cover my lamp with (it also has to be heat resistant because it gets very hot) in order to dim the lights.-

QUESTION:
Plug In Dimmer Switch for Lamp?
Can anyone tell me if a plug in dimmer switch for a lamp reduces the voltage when you use the dimmer? The reason I ask is because I have a lamp which has three light bulbs. Unfortunately the light bulbs are rated for 240v and our electricity supply usually varies around 249 to 255volts. I believe this is one of the reasons my bulbs don’t last so long and blow. I have not been able to find the type of bulbs I need that are rated for 250 or 260v. The majority only come rated for 230 or 240v. I guess this is a good way to keep profits up for the bulb sellers!
If a dimmer switch does lower voltage then I could use one to maybe reduce it by 10% so that my bulbs last longer.
I use regular bulbs because I absolutely hate the energy saving ones. I’ve tried the energy saving ones previously and they are just far too dim. You need to use twice as many to get half the same amount of light. Also the light they emit I don’t think is very good for you. Plus I’m not so sure that they are that better for the environment from manufacture to scrapping and with the mercury they contain and the reported health effects from the frequencies they emit light out at.
If the government is going to ban the use of normal bulbs then that leaves me up a creek. I will have to stockpile them. I don’t like the energy saving bulbs, LED bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs or the halogen ones either. Regular fluorescent aren’t too bad if you get a good quality tube and they’re good for your aquarium or use in an office, but in the home you want something more asthetically pleasing. Apart from regular bulbs and fluorescent the light from the rest though is either too intense or too dim and very bad.
My plan to stockpile regular bulbs isn’t going to work if I still go through them too quickly that’s why I was asking the question if dimmer switches can reduce voltage.
If they can I’d love to have some suggestions on where I can buy a dimmer switch and how much it would cost. I would need two dimmers at the moment. One for a floor lamp from Ikea and the other for a desk lamp so they both have to be plug in. I think an inline one would be good for the desk lamp. Will need to do the rest of my lights at a later date.
If dimmer switches don’t alter the voltage then I guess next option to look at would be some sort of inverter to step it down a bit from 255 to 220/230? Is that even possible? Can you get an inverter that does this that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg?
Thanks for your help with this question and listening to my vociferations on eco bulbs

ANSWER:
Domestic dimmer switches do not simply reduce the voltage to lamps. They work by chopping up the alternating current (AC) mains supply into small slices. If you look inside you’ll see a small potentiometer and some clever electronics.Imagine drawing a couple of cycles of a sine wave on a piece of paper and then dividing it up into vertical slices. Now remove every other slice and see what’s left. A dimmer switch does a similar thing. Remember that the AC mains not only varies in voltage from its maximum to 0V every half cycle, but it also changes polarity so your graph will extend below the 0 line.
The chopped up electricity supply to the bulbs is effectively being switched off/on at rapid intervals. Also, you can see that some of the slices are not at the maximum voltage level. This means that the filament(s) don’t really have a chance to reach maximum temperature (brightness) before being switched off again.
In other words, the bulb is not receiving mains alternating at 50Hz, it is being fooled into receiving an apparently lower frequency.
The dimmer does not actually reduce the voltage. The apparent lower levels (from the 250v max) is simply due to the natural cycling of the AC mains supply. If it was left uninterrupted at 50Hz (raw mains frequency) then a normal incandescent light bulb will continue to glow at maximum brightness. The drops due to the AC are not enough to let it cool down.
By varying the frequency of these pulses the effective brightness of the lamp is controlled. You may even notice that they se
em to flicker slightly when set to very dim. Now you know why.Low voltage (transformer fed) lights, CFT and fluorescent bulbs need a consistent 50Hz supply and will not work with a conventional domestic dimmer switch.
I don’t know why you condemn LED bulbs. There are none available at the moment for domestic use which are designed to replace ordinary incandescent bulbs. Don’t pre-judge them on what you may see in special environments. When they are available as plug-in replacements you’ll probably find that they are much better than CFT bulbs. Most will have a daylight colour.
You can buy dimmer switches (wall mounted and in-line) at most decent hardware shops and places like B&Q and Ikea. They’re not normally expensive. I would say less than £5 for a decent one.

QUESTION:
CPU temp is very disturbing?
My computer just randomly powered off while I was gaming. But my desk lamp dimmed seconds prior to it happening, so I’m not sure if it has anything to do with it.But after re-booting I used Speedfan to check my CPU temperature, and it read 90C then it slowly went down to about 70C. I kept speedfan open and started to watch a video online and my CPU temperature shot to 107C!!!!!
I don’t know what the hell is going on. I cleaned out my PC last week, but couldn’t clean the heatsink because I couldn’t get the damn thing out of my case. Also I didn’t have any compressed air to blow it clean.
What should I do about my computer?
Ah crap I gotta open my PC (is lazy)I guess I will check that, and see if my local computer guy can hook me up with some thermal paste, but the problem is I can’t get my heatsink away from my CPU even to put thermal paste on there….
I was playing the sims 2 in windowed mode, with MSN running at the same time….-
ANSWER:
That’s too hot. I would quickly tap the heat sink with my finger (the way you would tap an iron to see if it’s hot) to see if the heat sink is really the temperature of boiling water. I think most likely, it is not. In that case, the heat sink is making poor contact with the processor. You will need to put some thermal grease, or a thermal pad, between the processor and the heatsink for better heat transfer. You can buy such things wherever heat sinks are sold. Or get a new heat sink – there should be some of that stuff in the package.I assume also that the heatsink has its own little fan on it, and SpeedFan shows reasonable RPM on that fan.

QUESTION:
parallel and circuits question?
I want straight forward easy to understand answer please!!!
1.does the light in a parallel circuit go dimmer when you unscrew one?2.what happen to the brightness of series if you use 2 instead of 3?
3.Why most lamp use switch on a desk lamp wired in series with the bulb??
-
ANSWER:
Golden is correct. A little more detail.1. no, the whole idea of a parallel circuit is that the loads (lights) are not dependent on each other.
2. they get brighter (all other things being equal) because you lower the resistance which increases the current and the power.
3. so you can turn it off and on. Like unplugging the light. that is the only you can wire it. It you put it in parallel, the switch would cause a fire.

11 Ways To Ease The Stress If You Are Working Long Hours At The Desk!
No day in your working life will be so bad if you follow the right ergonomic techniques.
Usually, an employee working at the desk has a habit of working for longer hours without following proper ergonomic techniques.
In order to avoid stress throughout the day and work with maximum alertness, you need to follow some ergonomic techniques
Ergonomic techniques are very important to ease the stress and work with maximum alertness.
When you spend maximum amount of time in front of your desk, you should be aware of how the arrangement and design of your equipment can impact your health, comfort and overall productivity.

8. Know the right usage of input device!
Whatever might be the input device you use, make sure that it must be within your reach and dont hold it too tightly so that there is less stress on the muscles.
If you are not feeling good with your mouse, try an alternate one like trackball or touch pad.
Placing the input device too close or too far can cause discomfort in your forearm, shoulder, elbow and wrist.
Follow these tips to overcome from these discomforts:
Place the mouse at your comfortable reach for natural relaxation and comfortable eye-hand coordination.
Avoid bending wrist upward and ensure that you are sitting lower than your elbow height so that holding the mouse can be easier for you.
Make sure the mouse surface is stable.

9. Give priority to the work habits!
Working at the desk can cause discomfort on your upper extremities and on your eyes. So, to avoid these discomforts, you need to learn some work habits.
Take frequent breaks for every 20-40 minutes, get up and walk around for 2-3 minutes.
Dont stay in one static position for longer hours, change the posture periodically.
Provide your eyes with vision breaks for every hour.
Stretch your neck, back, and hands for every hour.
Substitute the mouse usage by using alternative keystrokes.
Follow these work habits, so that you wont experience any stress on any part of your body.
10. Identify Proper usage of laptop computers!
Work on a laptop computer only when it is on the table but not on your lap. If you need to use it very frequently, it is better to use separate mouse and keyboard to reduce the stress on your hands and wrists.
Techniques you need to follow while using laptop computer:
While typing, place your hands straight so that your wrists should not bend and should not be resting on your lap, table, or on a palm rest. Use palm or wrist rests to give support in the break.
If the table you are using is too high for keying, then use a laptop holder by tilting the laptop towards you.

QUESTION:
Can a swing arm clamp in desk lamp be used to germinate flower seedlings with fluorescent bulbs?-
ANSWER:
Yes, for up to 16 hours a day (they need a period of darkness after they’ve germinated). Full sunlight is by far better, but sometimes difficult to supply. If the seedlings begin to get “leggy”, they’ll need more full-spectrum light–from the sun or a growlight. Be sure the seeds you have require light to germinate; some will only germinate in darkness (by covering the seed).VCE Master Gardener

QUESTION:
Where can I find a swing-arm lamp that can be mounted on a sloping surface?
I’m looking for a basic swing-arm lamp desk lamp that I can mount on the side of my drafting table, which sits at an angle of about, oh, 30 degrees or so.The lamp I’ve just tried has the bottom of the swing-arm that just plops into the clamp-on base, so that if you try to use it on a sloped surface the lamp keeps swinging around at gravity’s bidding.
Anybody know where (online?) I can find a swing-arm lamp that won’t do this? I just want a basic lamp, hopefully under -. Thanks.

QUESTION:
Looking for a certain type of hardware type thing…?
This might be the strangest question I’ve ever asked. I don’t know what its called or if this sort of thing even exists (but I swear I’ve seen it somewhere, if only in my Lego bucket as a kid…) I hope I can explain what I’m envisioning well enough that somebody can tell me what it is called or if such a thing exists…Basically what I’m looking for is a bracket/brace sort of deal used to connect two bolts to each other at 90 degree angles. What it would amount to is a small ring of metal next to another small ring of metal turned 90 degrees, thats it. If I still haven’t explained it well enough, take your two hands and make circles with them and place them next to each other. then turn one so that you can look through it and the other is perpendicular to you.
I’m looking for this to be pretty small too, with about 3/16″ holes. Non-threaded is probably better, but I could make due either way. If anything like this exists, please let me know. I don’t have access to any sort of welding/torching/soldering equipment, either, so tacking two pieces of anything together isn’t really an option
(You know, I hate going out and buying new things because one part of the old one wears out. When replacement parts are unavailable, a little self-engineering is called for. In this case its a swing arm desk lamp… they make all sorts of replacement parts for decorative lamps but it seems the practical ones are neglected)

Home Building – Interior Home Lighting
Home lighting is probably the most important element in home interior decorating, because it is instrumental in setting the mood of any room. It can affect performance, mood, morale, safety and security. When deciding what lighting to use in your new home it’s important to consider how each room will be used, what fixtures are appropriate, energy efficiency and cost. To ensure that you will achieve the desired effect for your rooms, you first need to understand the four basic types of home lighting.
Ambient or general lighting illuminates the whole room. It is a good idea to install a dimmer with your track and recessed lights so that you have the flexibility to adjust the brightness. Examples of ambient lighting are recessed downlights, cove lighting, soffit lighting, valance lighting, wall washers, sconces, surface-mounted lights, pendant lights, track lights, chandeliers, under-cabinet lights and portable fixtures.
Task lighting provides sufficient light to help you perform the task at hand, for example reading, cooking, shaving, etc. Task lighting should be glare free and it should make things easy to see without tiring or straining your eyes. Examples of task lighting are valance lighting, pendant lights, under-cabinet lights and portable fixtures.
Accent lighting is focused lighting that is used to illuminate an object in your home like a sculpture, piece of art, or architectural element. Accent lighting is about three times as bright as ambient lighting. Example of accent lighting are wall washers, sconces, track lights and under-cabinet lights.
Natural lighting comes through windows, doors, and skylights and depending on the time of day, season, or weather, it can vary in brightness and intensity.
Types of Lighting Fixtures
Once you’ve considered what types of activities will be taking place in a room and what type of lighting is needed, you’ll need to decide what fixture will work best in each room in your new home and don’t be afraid to use multiple types of interior lighting. In fact, mixing and matching different light fixtures can help create a dramatic look and aesthetically pleasing room. The type of lighting you choose can also help make a room look larger or smaller.
Be prepared: Walking into any light fixture store can be overwhelming, so be sure to have a list of the types of fixtures your considering and how many you will need in each room. Before purchasing any fixtures, make sure you ask your builder if there are any restrictions on the types of fixtures that can be used in any specific room, because sometimes things such as ductwork, insulation or ceiling height can affect whether or not a fixture can be installed properly in a room.
Tip: Your local American Lighting Association (ALA) showroom is the best place to view the many different styles, sizes and shapes of lighting fixtures that are available to deliver the ambient/general, task, and accent light you need. Below is a list of the different types of lighting fixtures.
Hall/Foyer Fixtures can create a harmonious atmosphere, while providing you with the general lighting you need to greet guests and move safely from room to room. Use ceiling, chain-hung, or close-to-ceiling fixtures in hallways, stairways, and entranceways.
Chandeliers can add sparkle and style to your dining room while giving you the ambient/general lighting you need for dining and entertaining. They are also used in large bedrooms, foyers, or over a living room grouping or a grand piano. Some are designed with downlights to provide task lighting for homework or table games. Chandeliers are available in both incandescent and tungsten-halogen. The addition of a dimmer control lets you alter the intensity of light to suit the mood and activity going on in your room.
Pendants can provide both task and ambient/general lighting. Equipped with shades or globes to avoid glare, they are usually found hanging from the ceiling over dinette tables, game tables, kitchen counters, or other work areas. When used over end or night tables, they free up the space occupied by table lamps. For added flexibility use a dimmer control.
Ceiling Fixtures usually provide general lighting and are very practical in busy areas such as foyers, hallways, bedrooms, kitchens, baths, laundry rooms, playrooms, and dens. They are available with incandescent, fluorescent, and energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
Wall-Mounted Fixtures can provide ambient/general, task, and accent lighting. Many are designed to match and supplement dining room chandeliers, or to provide hallway, bedroom, or living room lighting. Wall brackets are often used for task lighting at the bathroom mirror. They are available with a choice of incandescent, tungsten-halogen, and energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
Bath/Vanity Lighting Strips provide task lighting, while supplementing the general lighting provided by ceiling fixtures. Similar to the lighting in theater dressing rooms, these soft glowing strips of globe-shaped incandescent bulbs provide excellent lighting for grooming.
Portable Lamps provide ambient/general, task, and accent lighting and give you the added flexibility of moving the light whenever you want. Table lamps, floor lamps, and torchiers are available in a variety of styles to complement your decor. Small specialty lamps, such as clip-on lights, uplight cans, adjustable task lights, mini-reflector spotlights, desk and piano lamps fill a variety of task and accent light needs. These lamps are available with incandescent, tungsten-halogen, and energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs.
Track Lighting can provide ambient/general, task, or accent lighting all at once in one flexible lighting system. You can move, swivel, rotate, and aim the individual fixtures in any direction along the track, giving you the versatility to change your lighting scheme whenever you want. You can also hang chandeliers and pendants from the track. Track fixtures are available in standard or low-voltage current, and a choice of incandescent, tungsten-halogen, and energy-efficient compact fluorescent light sources.
Recessed Lighting can provide ambient/general, task, or accent lighting inconspicuously. Installed in the ceiling with only the trim showing, recessed fixtures can be used anywhere in the home. They are ideal for low-ceiling areas, and with a special adapter they can also be used in cathedral ceilings. They are available as downlights, adjustable accent lights, and wall washers in both standard and low-voltage current and a choice of incandescent, tungsten-halogen, and energy-efficient compact fluorescents.
Undercabinet/ Undershelf Fixtures provide both task and accent lighting. Under kitchen cabinets they light a countertop. In a display cabinet they show off special collections. They include slim, energy-efficient fluorescents, miniature track lighting, and strips of low-voltage mini-lights.
What About the Bulbs?
Certain fixtures are designed for a specific type of bulb, such as a two- or four-pin fluorescent bulb. Others can accommodate the more common screw-in type. When choosing fixtures, be sure to note what type of bulb it requires, so that you won’t be surprised to find the bulb you bought isn’t the right one.
Incandescent bulbs are the most heavily used in homes. Unfortunately, these bulbs are inefficient and expensive to operate. Fluorescent bulbs have come a long way from the humming, glaring office lights we’ve all been exposed to. Today’s fluorescent bulbs don’t hum, and they provide light that is almost identical to incandescent bulbs. The best part is that fluorescent bulbs have significantly longer life than incandescent bulbs (almost 10 times as long), use less energy and are affordably priced for use in your home. Halogen and LED bulbs are also available for the home market. Both are more energy efficient than incandescent bulbs, but are more expensive than fluorescent lights.
Room-By-Room Home Lighting Ideas
When you start shopping for lighting fixtures, you’ll find that there are literally hundreds of home lighting options, so think of lighting from two perspectives – function and aesthetics. Functionally, your home lighting needs to provide the right type of light in sufficient quantity for your intended purpose. Aesthetically, you can configure your lighting to create the desired mood through its intensity, style and color.
Below are some ideas for lighting the various rooms in your home.
Living Rooms
- Place a lamp about 42 inches above the floor in areas where you plan to do reading.
- Highlight a framed piece of art with halogen track lighting or by attaching a picture light.
- Use accent lights to illuminate bookcases or display shelves.
- Install recessed lighting as your general lighting or to accent beautiful wall textures, but be sure your lighting comes with a dimmer.
- Slim strip lights come in just about any length and can stick to the edge of shelves or ledges to highlight displays.
Kitchens
- A grid of recessed ceiling cans will provide great general lighting and flexibility.
- Install individual recessed down-lights as task lighting for the sink and cooking areas.
- Place halogen pendant lights over bars and countertops.
- Under-cabinet lights make excellent task lighting.
Dining Rooms
- A chandelier with a dimmer over the dining room table creates a beautiful setting.
- Highlight a framed piece of art with halogen track lighting or by attaching a picture light.
- Install halogen strip lighting inside your china cabinet to highlight china or collectibles.
- If don’t care for a chandelier and you have a long table, try using a trio of pendant lights.
Bedrooms
- Place table lamps on your bedside tables, but avoid halogen lamps in children’s rooms because they can get very hot.
- Wall sconces can provide good general lighting without being too bright.
- If space is limited you should consider recessed lights or pendant lights.
- If you want to create a romantic setting, place candles around the room.
Bathrooms
- Use shadow-free fluorescent or incandescent lights around mirrors for grooming.
- To avoid shadows, place mirror lights on the side rather than directly overhead.
- It’s always a good idea to install a night light.

QUESTION:
Can you use a fluorescent light bulb in a desk lamp?
I’m going to start some seedlings indoors soon and can’t afford to purchase a gardening lamp. Could I put a fluorescent light bulb in my tabletop desk lamp?-
ANSWER:
You can get a compact fluorescent bulb like a CFL that will fit your lamp and get it to turn on in your desk lamp. The problem is that it will not contain all the sunlight colors that your plant needs to grow. You would be better off buying a non-fluorescent “Gro-Lamp” bulb that does have the proper light spectrum and using that in your desk lamp. They are only a few bucks. You don’t have to buy a huge fluorescent fixture for that purpose.
