The Story Behind Antique Tiffany Lamps
No other lamp is sought out by antique collectors quite like the lamps made by Louis Comfort Tiffany and his studio in New York. These stained glass lamps came from his artistic ability to control light and work with glass for a beautifully unique combination. The studio created and produced many products out of glass and today these fine pieces fetch a high price at auction houses and antique shops.
The studio worked mostly in blown glass and glass tiles from its inception until 1878. But it was that year in which Tiffany created his first opalescent glass window. Despite legal disputes as well as significant social mudslinging with John LaFarge over who came up with the idea for opalescent glass first, Tiffany made stained glass windows extremely popular with the wealthy.
These stained glass panels were constructed by cutting the needed pieces for a pattern out of large sheets of colored glass. Of course there was plenty of waste off of each sheet of opalescent glass which Tiffany eventually began using to make his stained glass lamps. Of course these lamps did not start out exactly as those, which come to mind at first for most people.
When many people think of Tiffany table lamps, floor lamps, chandeliers, and more those constructed from the pieces of stained glass are what first come to mind. But before he made these lamps he was constructing other styles, which bore his name. These glass lamps were made with blown glass globes as well as other forms of blown glass.
It was in 1899 that the company started creating their lamps with a heavy bronze base combined with the intricately worked glass shade. This shade was made much like his stained glass panels but instead of a flat pattern the glass was in the form of a shade. This was accomplished with a lead frame holding together the pieces of opalescent glass just like his famous windows.
These lamps had many features that made them desirable back in the turn of the century and they are still the features that are sought even today. Constructed with heavy bronze bases, which provided not only a sturdy but also an elegant foundation to hold the delicate glass shade. Each shade was hand constructed using beautiful stained glass, which diffused light pleasantly and evenly. These shades were so well made that even today they will not break unless handled carelessly or perhaps dropped. Each Tiffany lamp was carefully finished off with the best wiring and fittings for a lamp that in many cases still operates like new today despite the years.
Today antique collectors quickly grab these lamps when they become available often paying top dollar for the piece. For those who cannot afford the cost of a true antique Tiffany lamp they can purchase a modern lamp with wonderful details using the same patterns in stained glass lamp reproductions.

The arms could be bent and turned in any direction to point light at anywhere you wanted it to go. This style has hung on throughout the years if for nothing else but its ingenious design. Though the idea is still used today, the original lamp gets a spot in the retro hall of fame, especially if you can find it in avocado green.
Another fabulously retro lamp that we can thank the 1970’s for is the Modern Arco Lamp. Why in the world would you want to have a perfectly straight lamp on the left side of your chair for reading when you can have this retro lamp sitting on your right and arcing over your head to end up on your left side? Any retro decorated room is incomplete without one of these monsters; just make sure you have the room for a retro lamp as big as this.
Yet another retro lamp that has actually had a huge impact on today’s lamp styles is the torch floor lamp from the 1950’s. Though there were torchiere lamps before that time, this design modernized it into a style that is still quite popular. Now you can find torchiere lamps with a variety of energy saving bulbs from compact fluorescent to halogen. It’s really not a retro lamp, but deserves to be recognized for its pioneering efforts toward today’s interior decorating.
If you’re looking to use retro lamps in your design scheme, there are more than enough out there to choose from, and most are being produced today so you don’t have to spend a killing at an antique store. How can I prevent my window A/C unit from tripping the circuit?
I live on the 2nd and 3rd floors of a row house that was built in the 1800s and rennovated about 10-15 years ago. Last night I put a window a/c unit (provided by the landlord) in a 2nd floor window, but every time I turned it on it would trip the circuit breaker for the whole 2nd floor after running for only 10 minutes. The only other things running on the circuit were: 1 fridge, 1 light (halogen torchere lamp), and 1 tv. I don’t know the power rating or amps off the top of my head, but the unit is probably at least 10 years old. I had the a/c unit plugged into a surge protector, but it always tripped at the circuit breaker and not at the surge protector. Is there anything I can do to prevent the a/c from overloading the circuit, short of calling an electrician? It seems a little ridiculous to me that the circuit can’t handle 4 appliances – am I missing some important part of the equation?
How do I get a dedicated circuit for the a/c? It seems to me that the entire 2nd floor is on one circuit (although I know next to nothing about circuits, so I could be very wrong). If the entire 2nd floor IS on one circuit, the only way to get the a/c and frige on separate circuits would be to unplug the fridge whenever I want to turn on the a/c – which isn’t exactly practical. Do I need to get an electrician in to install another circuit?-

this is your problem and how to solve it 1 refrigidare and air conditioner cannot be on same circuit for any reason….do not put bigger fuse in …..what you need is either a dedicated circuit to the fridge or the air conditioner….or you could move the ac somewhere else so that it will be on a circuit with something that uses very little power such as tv or plug in lamps..

What is this antique light used for?
I am an interior designer who has a client who can’t identify the use of antique lamp she owns. It is old and a combination of iron and glass and is electric. It is about 36 inches tall. All this is in one peice. It has a 12″x12″ platform on the top of emerald green glass which is uplighted from a torchere type lamp underneath. I would say it was a plant stand or display table of some kind. Her 83 year old mother insists that it is a piano light. This client has a very extensive and valuable antique collection of furnishings, accessories, paintings, fabulous vintage clothing, silver, linen, cars, etc. that was inheirited from her family members. So it is no telling what this thing is. Please help me!!!-

Original Dale Tiffany lamps sell for thousands of dollars – you are buying a reproduction. The dragonfly is one of his more famous and popular styles. Just like you would buy a chippendale sofa today it in not made by Chippendale. Still a nice product being made in China for a reasonable price if I do my math right 5 go for it

This is an old table lamp with 3 bulbs and one pull chain. It sequences by lighting lamp 1 on the first pull, lamps 2&3 on the second, and all three on the last pull. How does this switching work and where can I find a similar pull switch?-

when you pull the string, it turns a gear 1/4 of the way. (the fourth setting is off) at every 1/4 gear turn, it connects a different part of the circuit to allow electricity to pass through it and to the corresponding lamps. the fourth setting (off) doesnt have an electrical connections assigned to it.

Those full-size bulbs use a lot more electricity and are more breakable than the smaller LED light therapy boxes. Not as portable either. I bought a small LED light box several years ago and am very happy with it, it is very effective for my winter blahs. When we have a spell of cloudy weather, I turn it on for my parakeets in the morning, they face toward the light and sing a pretty song, they are happy to get the light too. The LED light boxes are also cool to the touch.I had chickens about 30 years ago when I lived out in the country. They wouldn’t lay eggs very often all through the winter months. Someone told me if I put a light on them that they would lay eggs. So I strung a 100-watt bulb in the chicken house and turned it on, I had eggs all winter from then on.

First, figure out how many hours you want to run the lamp. Lets say ten hours for a nice, round number. That times 450 watts gives us 4500 watts of required energy.That little 10 watt panel would need to run 450 hours to give you that much energy. I would recommend getting a 450 watt panel which, if in full sunlight for 10 hours would give you the energy to power your light for ten hours at night.
You also need batteries that will store enough energy to power your light for the required time.
Now, here comes the expensive part. You will need 4500 Watt/hours, which when divided by 12 volts (car battery), means you need 375 Amp hours in battery capacity.
I use semi truck batteries which give you 200 Amp hours each at 12 volts. These run about 0 each.
And you need an inverter that provides at least 500 watts continuous power.
In summary. 450 Watt solar panel, 2x 200Ah semi truck batteries (or 4x 100Ah marine deep cycle batteries) and a 500 watt inverter.
If you want to save on batteries, I get them for each. I go to semi truck repair shops and pay the core charge for sulfated batteries. Look for batteries with no outward, visible damage and that are less than a year old. I use a special battery restoring charger that brings them back into service. See link below.

I need opinions on wedding style! Photos included!?
We were planning on having a “Country-Western” themed wedding, but the place we are having it at is more “Classy” than rustic. Also, we were going to do a bar-b-que buffet but I found a GREAT “Southern Bell” menu. If we went with a “country” wedding, would it be tacky to incorporate some Western motif? For example, horseshoes, cowboy boots, etc. I had planned on wearing boots under my dress. There will also be a bonfire, hayrides and a petting zoo.I have included a link to the photo page of the “Antique barn” where we will have our reception. (Which has some decorations as u can see). The ceremony will be on the lawn under a large oak. Oh, the wedding will most likely be in the fall and I wanted chocolate brown and sunflower yellow for my colors. (I planned on having a bouquet of daisies and black-eyed Susan’s). The colors are more rustic, but the flowers country! The tables will have red and white checkered gingham table cloths, a hurricane lamp with a candle in it for center pieces, and raffia (straw) wrapped around the base of the hurricane lamp. Lamp was by it self turning of/on over and over again.
Not flickering, light bulb was on and steady. It was plugged into the wall

Many times ghosts and spirits can manipulate varies things including electronic devices. This is one way that they can indeed get our attention. Usually there are other such occurrences that happen along with these little happenings such as you have experienced. Have you had other experiences in your home or is this the first time ? Have others also had these experiences such as you have ? At times only one person in a family or in a particular place will be the only one who has these paranormal encounters and it is enough to drive a person nuts. That they are the only ones and at times the others do not believe them. Other times it can be the majority of a family and only one person may not share these encounters. The wattage of the bulbs is your main concern. It doesn’t matter what type of light fixture you have really. The higher the wattage, the more energy consumption. Look at the watt rating and compare between a few bulbs. The lumens rating is the brightness. The higher the lumens rating, the brighter the light. Clear bulbs give off better light than frosted bulbs or soft lighting bulbs(has a yellow glow). I recommend the “pig-tail” type bulbs. They cost a little more but are a lot more energy efficient and last 5 times longer than standard bulbs. If you have ceiling fans or overhead light fixtures with numerous bulbs(all my fans have 4 bulbs and my dining light has 5) you can use a lower wattage bulb since 4 or 5 lights put off a lot more than just one. I wouldn’t use anything over a 60 watt in the areas where a lot of light is required and use 40 watt bulbs in the lesser lit areas. I use 60 watt bulbs in my living room, bathrooms, and front foyer. All other lights in my house have 40 watt. I would use the pig-tails first, clear bulbs second, and frosted bulbs last. Just always remember, the wattage usage printed on the package is the most important # you need to look at.

If it’s a three-wattage bulb (light level changes with each click when it’s working properly) you may want to start by replacing the bulb. The top of the bulb will have three wattage ratings printed on it such as 30-70-100. That may solve your problem. If the 70 watt filament is broken the lamp will work on alternate steps of the switch – which sounds like your problem.
If that fix doesn’t work or it is a single wattage socket you will probably have to replace the socket/switch assembly. The repair is actually quite simple, but if, as you say, you are ‘mechanically challenged’ I would ask a neighbor who is not, to do the repair. You mention adjustment – it really isn’t worth the time or trouble to try to fix the switch. If yours is a standard everyday variety lamp with the switch mechanism as part of the socket the fix takes about 5 minutes and is simply a matter of replacing the defective socket and switch assembly. Oddly enough, if the switch is separate from the socket assembly the repair will be slightly more difficult, but still ‘no big deal’.
As an aside, if the switch and socket are part of the same assembly, which is common, you have the option of replacing the current socket with one which will accept a bulb with three wattage levels and you will be able to vary the intensity of the output of the lamp simply by using the new switch. How about that? Good luck! I live in New Jersey and would be happy to help if you live nearby.

We sit nervously in a dark (underground) mine, waiting to be saved. We do not know how long it will take, or if anyone will be able to get this deep underground; all we can do is wait.For most of us, it is our first year working in the mines. We are already used to the darkened walls of the (small) enclosed space we call our workplace. We are used to seeing the (small) dim torch-lit lamps against the walls. Droplets form on my head as the heat and humidity of the mine cause me to perspire. The usual stench of sweat and earth is thick around my nose.
The sound of anxiety in the thunderous cries of the people drowns out the emphatic noise of the heavy machines, which is turned off as we quieten down. The countless rocks cast colossal misshapen shadows upon the walls and the floor of the already-darkened mine.
The ground that I am sitting on had been trampled on over a thousand times. The shoe impressions on the ground may have been left by a thousand people, yet we are only just a few. I pick up a handful of the russet coloured earth and treacle it through my fingers. The terrain is full of minuscule rocks and stones that had come from the mine itself. It feels rough and dirty and full of moisture
The powerful underground-earth smell intensifies exponentially as the dirt falls onto the ground. The smell of dirt and earth is deep in my nose. The smell is so potent, I taste it in my mouth; it tastes like I had taken a spoonful of it.
I get up from the ground and look out at the lode of miners. It looks as if there are more people than what there is. The small mine makes it look like there are more people. My skin feels sticky and clammy and tastes like salt because of the dry perspiration caused by the warmth in the mine.
As I look across at the miners, I see the fear in their eyes. The thought of us not making it out of the mine alive makes it a lot harder to stay calm and collected. We feel like there is nothing more that we can do and that makes us helpless.
All of us are yearning that freedom of fresh air and the outdoors; we are yearning to communicate with our friends and families. The longing for this freedom has never been as much as it is right now; all we can do is wait.

Depending on what country you are in, coloured may be spelled correctly ( in US it is colored). Are the words in parentheses ones you are thinking about leaving out or changing to more interesting choices?Over all, this is a good sensory description. You could add more visual images. For example if you have lanterns, I bet there are interesting designs on the wall, perhaps some things have shadows larger than the original object. Perhaps the miners entertain themselves with making shadow puppets using their hands. What happens when the lamp burns out? or even when the miners think the lamp might burn out? The total darkness can easily disorient and upset people.
Another thing to consider, how will your mouth and hair feel after a few days… a little grungy, I’ll bet. Depending on the age and sex of the miners, you may feel the uncomfortable itch of a beard growing. Would you feel hungry, thirsty, depressed? Will you feel calm, or occasionally have a panic attack?
As far as feeling–I can’t tell if the mine is a dry, dusty cave, or a damp moldy cave. I get mixed messages from the passage. I suspect the droplets forming on your head are condensation, not sweat. After all you guys are just sitting there. There is no reason for the cave to get hotter and you are not exercising. Unless something else is going on, the temperature of a cave stays pretty constant. When you speak of the usual stench of sweat and dirt, I am not sure I understand. You would have to be in the cave for awhile for the sweat smell to be noticeable. The dirt would not stink unless you opened a pocket of gas such as sulphur. Perhaps the odor of mixed sweat and dirt is increasing, and becoming not so pleasant, the longer you are trapped in there.
What are you hearing? Is the equipment the type used to dig you out, or the ones that you were using when the cavein occurred? Can you hear the rescuers trying to communicate? Is anyone in your group tapping out a signal for would be rescuers? Are the machines turned off because you got quieter? Or did you get quieter because the machines turned off?

I have been in caves for only a few hours and get that dust and grit in my mouth, nose, and eyes. Do you have any food at all in the cave? Perhaps you can discuss the taste of ground water with the hard taste of minerals in it and how the grit drifts into whatever little bit of food you have. What happens to the little bit of food which clumsily gets dropped? Even a crumb of food will probably grow moldy in a damp cave. Where did you even get the food?

A lode of miners? Are you trying to make a pun or talking about a load of miners? For example, what is dry perspiration ( an oxymoron?) Also, I am not sure if treacle is the word you meant to use. I thought treacle was a type of syrup. Perhaps you meant “trickle.” When you use yearning, try adding the preposition”for” after it. We were yearning for the fresh air,the uncramped outdoors, the voices of our families.What is your organization pattern? It seems to jump from one sense to another. Select a paragraph. What is its main point? What examples can you give to support that point? You can organize this by time ( what do you see, hear, smell first, and then it will gradually changed as you have been in there several days.) You can also organize by position in space. What do you first sense, then what about the persn next to you, 10 feet away, in the distance? Another way to organize it is by sense, focus on visual first, then hearing, then smell, touch etc. Organizing with topic sentences and then details will also give you longer , better developed pargraphs.
Try this as an experiment. Cut apart your entire essay, sentence by sentence. Sort them into groups which “go” together betetr. Then use the cut and paste option on your word processor to reorganize the order. Group into paragraphs with a point, at least three examples or supports, and then a summary sentence. Add some transition words such as : meanwhile, suddenly, thereafter, first, then, after a few days ( or was it only a few hours) to move from one paragraph to another.
On a 1 to 100% scale, I would rank this in the 70s to 80s range if you are in 9th grade or lower. Otherwise , I would be more particular about expecting better organization, longer sentences and more sentences within a paragraph. It would also depend on whether this was an average class, a gifted class, or a challenged class.
Something else, that I would like you to consider. If you read this aloud, you can pick up some nice descriptive language. Consider adding some more similes, metaphors, alliteration and other literary devices.You have some excellent images which are lost in the sentence structure. Maybe you can do poems for your next project!
Example: a Haiku is 17 syllables, and three lines. Take just about any of your mini paragraphs and turn it into a Haiku.

well for LED’s you should have a dc power source, what do you plan on powering it with? you can run it off of you household 120V AC power, but you will first need to make a simple Full Wave Bridge Rectifier, perhaps with a capacitor so they won’t flicker as much at 60Hz. plans for these can easily be found online. Now remember that LED’s only light when you apply power in the correct direction so you have to make sure they are all facing the same way. Depending on your power source you have to make sure that each LED gets the right voltage. first, how many volts are these LED’s supposed to take? if you have a 6 volt circuit and you LED’s require 3 volts to operate, you will want to connect them in series, that way they share the voltage. with 12 volts you would use 4 LED’s now say you have 8 LED’s and a 12v power source, you would make two chains as in the previous example and connect them in parallel. All of these terms can easily be found on Wikipedia by the way. Now if you plugged this into the wall you would need around 40 LED’s in series assuming you have 120V service and that you already made a Rectifier. This number can be reduced by using a step down transformer to reduce the 120V to a lower AC voltage, you would still have to rectify it into DC, but you would no longer require as many LED’s. Welcome to simple electric circuits.
