Track Lighting Adapter
Lighting, Horse Arena Lights & Equestrian Horse Track Light
RLLD Commercial Lighting recommends using specification grade, metal halide fixtures for horse track lighting and rodeo arena lighting whenever possible. This is because MH lighting fixtures fall into the category of high intensity discharge lights, also known as HID, and produce an exceptionally bright, white light with excellent color rendering. Contractors who use specification grade MH fixtures can expect to have a powerful competitive advantage over other consultants who may not have access to our vendor contracts and are forced by limited resources to fall back on retail grade flood lights and second-rate MH fixtures that do not feature the level of sophistication and long life our products are known for.
Electricians contracted by an equestrian center can often create both a superior aesthetic and generate savings for their clients by using metal pole mount adapters and MH box floods to install new fixtures to existing lighting poles around the arena. Normally this does not require rewiring the existing system, so labor rates are lower and insurance liability is also reduced due to a lower risk of damage to electrical components. Equestrian facility managers may remember how previous contractors were able to install lights that were inexpensive and easy to mount and may not want to invest a large deal of money even if it is in a much needed upgrade. By using our mounting accessories and complimentary design consultation services, contractors can offer a competitive price and still light a rodeo arena or horse track with fixtures that feature the latest designs in internal reflectors that force the light toward the arena without creating glare or spill light in the process Benefits of this level of technology become even more readily apparent in an urban setting where dark sky laws strictly prohibit light pollution in neighboring business and residential areas.
Heavy duty mounting brackets make it easy to install fixtures on 6” to 12” wooden poles, allowing fixtures to subsequently pivot for directional aiming. We have a number of recommended wattage intensities designed for lighting poles of different heights, itemized as follows:
250 watt light fixtures are designed for a 20 foot or less mounting height
400 watt fixtures are designed for a 20’ to 30’ foot mounting height
1000 watt fixtures are designed for a 30’ or more mounting height
Wooden poles are not always the best poles to use for lighting equestrian facilities or commercial rodeo arenas that are aiming for a more refined and architectural image. In such instances, it is often advisable to substitute steel and fiberglass poles which are more durable and generally better suited to larger horse arenas and tracks.
Such larger equestrian facilities may even want a completely brand new horse track lighting or rodeo arena lighting system. Such facilities may have one or more employees on staff that carries an electrical technician certification, or they may be affiliated through networking channels with a professional lighting design firm. Metal halide fixtures ranging up to 1000W (with standard multi-tap ballast) can be obtained through our network of top-grade manufacturer relationships. Commercial grade steel poles and more decorative and robust wooden pole ranging in heights from 20’ to 40’ can also be ordered through out distribution channels, allowing for eclectic and custom equestrian horse track lighting systems to be designed from the ground up.
In order to fully anticipate the lighting needs of both smaller rodeo arenas and larger equestrian centers, we have created a number of horse arena lighting packages for the convenience of both the professional design firm and the licensed, DIY electrical expert. Commercial grade lighting kits can be purchased in either direct burial or flange mounts for concrete footings. These kits include a number of specific options that are both standard and customizable for a multitude of horse and rodeo arena lighting design requirements.

To provide this wide range of application and diversity of configurations, it is necessary to tightly regulate electron flow within the lamps to maximize lamp life and to generate a higher quality of evenly distributed light. This is why all of our equestrian center, horse track, and rodeo lighting fixtures feature multi-tap ballasts ranging from 120V up to 277V.
For this level of sophisticated wiring and lighting design, it is sometimes necessary for experts to confer with other experts, which is why we provide complimentary technical support and lighting design services to clients and serious inquirers.

QUESTION:
why isn’t my PSP headphone adapter not responding?
While I was listening to a a podcast today, I temporarily put my psp to sleep (which is something I usually do even when playing a game; just by pausing it and picking where I left off later) and once I turned it back on, and went back to the audio track I was playing, my PSP froze up on me! I couldnt control anything! So I forcefully had to turn it off (by holding the on switch up until the screen went off) and I turned it back on. The green light in the right-hand side began to rapidly flash for a minute or so and finally it turned on. Everything seemed normal as I had the audio track back up and running but a new problem came up: the headphone adapter (the one with the fast forward/rewind volume up/down) doesnt work!! Including that, when I try to fast forward or rewind with the D-Pad, it doesnt stop when I release either fwd or rewind.-
ANSWER:
first check connector of your remote control to psp. check it’s correctly connected. if does not work again reset your psp setting at the setting menu

QUESTION:
I have an Alpine interface adapter KCA-420i which I brought 4yrs ago with Ai-Net featured car stereo…?
I have an Alpine interface adapter KCA-420i made for the iPod which I brought 4yrs ago to go with an Ai-Net featured Alpine car stereo. My stereo was recently stolen from my car but I still have the interface and cables. I think it’s only right that I treat myself to a new stereo but I’m wondering if the new Alpine models are still compatible with this adaptor?I know many of the car stereos now-a-days already come MP3/iPod player ready with simple audio jack points in the head unit, which is cool, but not for me. However I also know there are stereos out there that have a USB point on the head unit, but Im not sure how advanced this feature is. This particular adaptor I have not only reads track info. but also provides power to a connected iPod, so I wouldn’t want to settle for an inferior model.
Can anyone shed some light on it’s possible use with current Alpine models, or whether I’d be better off buying a new set-up ignoring it’s sentimental value?
Any ideas or recommendations?
Thanks

ANSWER:
Alpine makes a lot of iPod compatible radios now that don’t need the 420i. The newer radios have text capability also.

Wine Bottle Light Fixture
Wine Cellar Lighting
Phantom linear strips make ideal wine cellar lights. Due to both their flexibility and concealment, they can be positioned in a variety of positions that create both direct and indirect cove lighting effects. In smaller wine cellars, they can function as the primary light source, and in larger cellars where people gather for a quiet getaway into a better, alternate reality, linear strips can be used to create ambient wine cellar lighting that contributes a vital element to romance, mystique, and relaxation.
Because many wine cellars are intended for viewing rather than visitation, lighting them with standard overhead accent lighting fixtures can often detract from the presentation of the wine bottles and the aesthetic of ornamental wine racks. Wine cellar lighting in this type of environment must completely hide its source and magnify the bottles, labels, and racks without giving away the source of illumination. This can be difficult in narrow confines that often resemble a long closet more than what most of us think of when we visualize a room. In such quarters, Phantom linear strips can be mounted on the rear interior of the doorway of the wine cellar. Light shines back into the room from the concealed strips, creating a luminance that appears to grow out of the corridor and intensify as it reaches the bottles.
In larger wine cellars, lighting takes on a more subtle role as an accent to atmosphere. Wine cabinets and wine racks stand along the walls, normally surrounding a table or two where people can gather and enjoy wine and cheese and quiet conversation. Most wine cellars of this nature, though spacious in floor space, nevertheless have low ceilings. Flexible cove lighting strips can be mounted on top of racks and cabinets, shining light upward along the back wall and reflecting it off the ceiling. This is similar to valance and cove lighting, but it has a much more powerful effect due to the space limitations of the low ceiling. The light appears to climb the wall and wrap itself around the ceiling, fading toward the center in a gentle glow.
Lighting wine racks themselves can also be done with similar effect using linear strips. Because Phantom makes every LED energy saving lighting strip custom to the dimensions of either a horizontal or vertical mounting surface, strips can be fitted to the interior of the rack to emphasize the label and surround the bottle with an aura of light. Or, wine cellar lighting strips can be concealed behind the racks along the rear surface of the wood, shining the light forward for a silhouette effect. Because of this remarkable flexibility and precise matching of fixture size to mounting dimensions, the possibilities for wine cellar lighting with Phantom custom lighting strips are as many and varied as wine cellars themselves.
For lamping options, we recommend LED 2800K festoon lamps as the most ideal source of both direct and indirect wine cellar lighting. 2800K festoons produce the warmest possible colour temperature available in LED, and they are a viable replacement for incandescent and xenon light sources. It is extremely important to use LED strip lighting in any wine cellar if at all possible. The absence of UV radiation and infrared heat renders the light harmless to the wine itself and prevents interference with any refrigeration systems that may be in place. The distribution of light produced by the 2800K LED festoon is indistinguishable from that of previous, more primitive technologies, and is ideal for creating an atmosphere of warmth, colour, and comfort. This is also the most energy efficient form of wine cellar in cabinet lighting and the best option for those who wish to leave the lights on for most, if not all, of the time.
Due to the highly original and custom nature of wine cellars, lighting in these environments has to reflect a level of equivalent customization and adaptability to some of the most eclectic cabinetry and interior architecture found in refined and elegant settings. Because our Phantom LED cabinet lights are all manufactured custom to specification orders, the best way to order these lights is to contact our main office and send us blueprints of your wine cellar (if available), along with a series of photographs that will help us build your lighting strips specific to the dimensions, floor plan, ceiling height, racks, and cabinetry of your cellar.

QUESTION:
How would I make a light fixture from wine bottles?
I’m trying to make a light fixture such as this one only with less light fixtures:http://www.eastpdxnews.com/ktmllite/images/uploads/080929/1-2-REX-2-BottleLights.jpg
Besides buying those very expensive light fixtures that look like wine bottles, I would rather collect them from people, but the bottoms, and make them myself.
1. How would I go about cutting the bottoms off so the glass doesn’t break, and doesn’t cut people?
2. Or, where could I take them to get cut for very cheap.
3. How can I actually hang the bottles from the ceiling with a light bulb in the fixture? What light fixture from a store such as “Lowes” can I purchase that will allow the wine bottle to be the shade (Individually)?
4. What light bulbs will produce the brightest light under these wine bottle, and would it be enough for a kitchen with about 2 or 3 of them?-
ANSWER:
You can cut the bottoms using a wet saw with a diamond blade, a saw with blade can be purchased for under 100.00 at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Wear gloves as some bottles may crack….GO SLOW!You can sand the edges to reduce the likelihood of cutting someone. use a wet sand paper and wear gloves.
You can drill out a piece of cork pass the wire through the top of the bottle through the bottom put the wire through the cork and the attach the light socket, pull the socket into the bottle and the cork will act as a stop at the top of the bottle.
Use the candle opera style bulbs.

QUESTION:
I have recently begun designing and building custom light fixtures. Where would I go to find a distributor ?
I am making my light fixtures and chendeliers from recycled wine bottles and using natural woods like walnut, maple, birch, bubinga, etc. My friends all love them, but I would like to try and sell them retail if other poeple would like them. Any info would help. Thanks
Scott
-
ANSWER:
If you’re just making them on your own for friends, it seems way, way, way to early for a distributor. They mostly handle items built in great numbers from factories and occasionally sucessful small scale items. You should start contacting non-chain stores in your area. Be prepared with professional looking materials on your work (ie full color photos, complete measurements, price for retail outlets and suggested retail price). Search out what is standard in your field before contacting anyone.
You should also look into selling items online at etsy. http://www.etsy.com/search_results.php?search_query=chandelier&filter%5B0%5D=handmade&filter%5B1%5D=housewares&filter%5B2%5D=lighting&filter%5B3%5D=chandelier

QUESTION:
We need help picking out a floor color for the living room, dining room and hallway!?
My wife and I are remodeling. We have dark bronze stained lighting fixtures on the ceiling. Espresso stained closest doors (2). We have espresso stained dining room furniture as well. Our entertainment console was to be espresso stained. Our walls our painted a Pecan Sandie (light tan) and our one wall in the dining room is painted Bold Sangria (dark wine color). Our Bold Sangria wall has our wine bottles hanging, etc etc… It all looks great except the old ’70s carpet. We would love to put in wood flooring, but not hardwood. We are looking at engineered or laminate. We live in a condo, on the first floor, so it would be over concrete… The question is, WHAT COLOR DO WE GO WITH?-
ANSWER:
any light color tile is nice it will make your house look far more brighter and compliment the rest of the house. If you stick to the lighter colors you don’t have to worry about choosing the next color when you bore of the same thing.

Led Aquarium Lighting Fixtures
Wavelength of led grow Light
Visible light belongs to the wavelengths between 380nm to 750nm. Wavelengths lower than 380nm are called ultra-violet (UV) wavelengths and contain high amounts of energy that can be harmful to plants. Only about 5% of sunlight is in the UV range, and greenhouse coverings tend to reduce that fraction further. It should be noted, that some artificial light sources generate UV, except the LED grow light
Photosynthesis is driven by wavelengths in the range of 400nm to 700nm, where roughly 50% of solar radiation occurs. Below this range, photosynthetic pigments poorly absorb light, and at the higher wavelengths, the energy is insufficient to support the requirements of photosynthesis. Plants utilize the light from LED grow light environment as an important developmental cue. Plants use their pigments, mainly by phytochrome to detect receiving light. Phytochrome participates in many aspects of plant development, including the regulation of stem elongation, leaf enlargement, and sometimes flowering.
Leaves absorb wavelengths effectively up to just above 700nm, mainly due to photosynthetic pigments, but do not absorb well in the 700nm to 860nm ranges.(PS. LED grow light can emit full spectrum for all phase of plant growth). In addition to plant pigments, water within plant tissues absorb infra-red (IR) region of receiving light. Only a small fraction of the absorbed energy from light is dissipated by plant metabolism. The great majority is dissipated by evapotranspiration, convective heat loss, and long-wavelength re-radiation (>3000nm).
LED grow light is the most efficient type of grow lighting that can be purchased. Compare to HID or fluorescent grow light, LED grow light can save 70-80% electricity bill and don’t contain any harmful substance for environment friendly.

QUESTION:
Is this LED fixture enough to grow low-light plants in a aquarium?
I have a led fixture that goes on a 9 gallon biube it has 3 very bright led lights and 1 blue nightlight. Iss this enough to grow some plants?-
ANSWER:
When it comes to LEDs the watts per gallon rule really isn’t applicable. Without knowing exactly what the output of your LEDS are I can’t say for sure, but I don’t think that you should have any problem growing low to even some medium light plants.

QUESTION:
Which Lighting fixture is best for a Bubble Tip Anemone?
I have a 50 gallon saltwater tank. The dimensions are 48”x 12.5” and 18.75” deep. I’ve been using the lighting hood and bulbs that came with it, which were aqueon 15 watt 18” bulbs. I’ve been interested lately in purchasing a bubble tip anemone, but i know it needs specific lighting requirements so im changing the current fixture with something better. So, are LED lights good for anemones and corals? I was reading that some are equivalent to MH and T5s and are the new SW aquarium thing. Which of these fixtures would be best for what I’m doing? http://www.petco.com/product/111939/Zoo-Med-AquaSun-T-5-HO-Double-Light-Linear-Fluorescent-Hood.aspx?CoreCat=certona-_-ProductListTopRated_Fish_3-_-Zoo%20Med%20AquaSun%20T-5%20HO%20Double%20Light%20Linear%20Fluorescent%20Hood-111939 , http://www.petco.com/product/112418/Marineland-LED-Double-Bright-Aquarium-Lighting-System.aspx?CoreCat=firstinresult_marinelandjunepress#sf , or http://www.petco.com/product/112972/Wave-Point-High-Output-T5-Fluorescent-2-Lamp-Aquatic-Lighting-System.aspx?CoreCat=MM_FishSupplies_HoodsLighting . If you know of any other good fixtures, PLEASE let me know. THANK YOU!!-
ANSWER:
Yes, some LED fixtures have par values equal to that of MH and T5 at depths found in average aquariums, however, I would not assume that all LED fixtures are created equal. Most LED systems that are used for coral lighting have 3 watt nodes and are very expensive. I think within 5 years everyone will be buying LED lighting for their reef but, as of right now, not enough information is available about the long term effectiveness of led lights for sustaining corals. I would hold off on LED lighting.I would say that both of those lights are too weak for most corals and a bubble tip anemone. A good fixture for the price is a Tek Light:
http://www.marinedepot.com/48_inch_4x54W_Sunlight_Supply_Tek_Light_High_Output_Fluorescent_Lighting_Fixture_48_Inch_T5_Fluorescent_Light_Fixtures-Sunlight_Supply_Inc-SL2111-FILTFIT58U-SL2117-vi.html
The individual parabolic reflectors greatly increases the efficiency of the bulbs.
Another good fixture is this ATI system, but it’s more expensive.
http://www.marinedepot.com/ATI_48_Inch_SunPower_T5HO_High_Output_Fixtures_48_Inch_T5_Fluorescent_Light_Fixtures-ATI-UZ3009-FILTFIT58U-vi.html
The 4 bulb models should be plenty for you 50 gallon tank. These fixtures do not come with bulbs. I recommend the following bulb setup for great color on your anemone. From front to back:
ATI Blue Plus
UV Super Actinic
UV Aquasun
ATI Blue Plushttp://www.bulkreefsupply.com/store/products/lighting/t5-florescent-aquarium-lighting/t5-florescent-bulbs?p=1

which is better lighting for a reef tank?
ok i am looking to start a reef tank in a few months and i am still a little confused on lighting, i have picked out a few that seem alright (and fit in my so called “aquarium budget” which is getting down to the last couple hundred i might add lol) i have my 55 gallon all set up and cycleing with a few crabs, and a clown fish my fiance just had to put in there (its been a week since we got him and he is doing very well considering i wanted to wait 2 more weeks before putting any fish in) we only have about 20 pounds of live rock in there because its all our LFS had left but we will be adding more as soon as they get more in…anyway back to lighting…i am not really picky about what corals to put in…i figured i would base what i got around my lighting. sooo i was wondering if any of these would work well and if so what corals would do best with them. here are the links (they are from petco because my LFS is crazy expensive for their lighting…and tanks…and fish…and everything else lol). and if any of these are not going to work, then please let me know what will…but i am trying to stay under 0…and it would need to be 48 inches long.http://www.petco.com/product/112418/Marineland-LED-Double-Bright-Aquarium-Lighting-System.aspx?CoreCat=LN_Shopping_FishSupplies_HoodsandLighting

ANSWER:
Either T5 lighting isn’t bad and will allow you to keep corals with low to low-moderate light requirements(put low-moderate light needs corals at the top, closest to the light), but no anemone for the clownfish (need high light, some need moderate-high).The nova extreme with the 4-6 bulbs is a better T5 system, but also double-tripple the price. Likely you LFS is carrying the better lights, thus the price difference.
http://www.opentip.com/Pet-Supplies/Current-Usa-Nova-Extreme-Pro-Aquarium-Lighting-Fixture-p-953195.html
For under 0 the T5s are not bad…the dual bulbs aren’t bad, 4 bulbs is much better though if you can find one not that much more, but most are >0
(note, you’ll run into Odyssea when looking, and the price will be tempting, but I’ve made that mistake, twice, and both times the light caught on fire in under two years of operation! No kidding)

Polished Brass Track Lighting
Choose Your Lighting Options Online
There are all sorts of options available to you when it comes to lighting your home. From ceiling lights and wall sconces, to table and floor lamps and chandeliers, you are really spoilt for choice. The solution to good home lighting is a combination of lights bright enough so you can do everything you need without straining your eyes, but also soft enough to create a relaxing ambience.
Use a mix of ceiling and wall lights to get the effect you want. Ceiling lights are the most important light fixture in any room and come in many different varieties. Elegant, modern recessed lights, flush and semi flush ceiling lights and pendant lights – which you choose will depend on the look you want to achieve and factors such as the height of your ceiling.
Pendant lighting is the most commonly used for ceiling lights in homes, they cast direct light or diffuse light and as they hang from the ceiling you need to ensure your ceilings are high enough. Buy contemporary pendant lights in classic white glass, stylish satin silver finishes with clear glass, bowl metal pendants in gloss black and brushed aluminium, clear, white, opal and black glass – you can practically find any style and design you wish online.
For traditional designs then check out the Fisherman Pendant Light in satin silver and antique brass complete with seeded glass, and the American Diner finished in antique brass with clear ribbed translucent glass diffuser. Or the Dulverton Lantern, a traditional lantern in antique brass finish or polished brass, and the Linear Pendant light, a satin silver chain suspension pendant with a modern twist centre and frosted dome glass diffuser, also available in antique brass.
Track lights can be moved around so if you want to change the focus or place attention on another area of the room then these are ideal. They allow you to have light where it is needed the most and are a flexible option. You can also use them to highlight a particular piece of art or other focal point.
Flush ceiling lights are ideal for low ceilings as they leave no space between the ceiling and the fixture’s diffuser. Five Things to Remember About Parking Lot Lighting
By following a few basic principles of parking lot lights recommended by RLLD Commercial Lighting, you can quickly determine what your client will need and choose fixtures from any number of US light fixture manufacturers. The following points are a few things to keep in mind that will make the process easier for both you and your clients.
#1-As a general rule, it is best to use American made parking lot lighting fixtures for garages and lots.
The quality controls mandated by multiple layers of government, and the warranties that major US manufacturers back their products up with, are unsurpassed in most of the world. Using American made parking lot lights also offers your client the best engineering, maintenance, and replacement options available on a domestic and local level. It helps ensure that parts can be maintained and expeditiously replaced if something does go wrong, because we are dealing with domestic entities who can deliver parts in a timely manner without the complications of overseas shipping.
#2-Most cities mandate that parking lot lighting be evenly distributed at 3-4 foot candles throughout the lot.
Many businesses might not be aware that their parking lot lighting levels have fallen below minimum levels. This happens when lamps deteriorate over an extended period of time. When this happens, lighting levels become uneven and pockets of shadow form. Adjacent areas of brightness distort perspective, and drivers find it difficult to accurately judge distances. Pockets of shadow form when foot candles drop below acceptable levels and become dangerous potential hiding places for vandals and assailants.
If you have found that your client’s parking lights are not generating the required level of lighting, or determine that illumination is being unevenly distributed throughout the facility, the first step in correcting the problem is to have a photometric analysis conducted on the facility. This will chart where foot candle levels need to be improved to overcome problem areas of shadow, and it greatly help in choosing fixtures that provide optimal directional placement of lighting into parking areas where obstructions are present or where the facility features and irregular design.
#3- Parking lights may need to be replaced to prevent your client from violating dark sky laws.
The dark sky movement has gained global momentum and shows no signs of slowing down. Dark sky laws have been passed in most major cities. These regulations have precipitated changes in a number of luminaire types, and parking light fixtures are among those most significantly impacted by this legislation. New luminaires favor semi-cutoff or full cutoff designs that direct the light downward into a predictable foot candle plot. Fixtures also feature advanced reflectors and optics that diffuse intense light into a more even spread of photons. This prevents light from spilling out of the parking area into adjacent streets and buildings, and it also works to reduce glare that was common in more primitive fixture designs that relied upon high levels of light as opposed to precision placement of light.
#4-Parking lot lighting needs to be as energy efficient as possible without sacrificing the quality of light.
The most obvious for this is reducing your clients’ power bills as much as possible. While the cost of a parking light upgrade may intimate many organizations, technology already exists that can pay for such an investment. LED parking lights can operate on solar batteries or standard low voltage transformers and have already proven themselves to produce better lighting in some cases than other parking lot fixtures, as well as lowering costs of operation by 60-80%. Solar lighting poles are an entirely new innovation that requires no electricity from the public energy grid.
#5-Parking lot lighting may require a highly aesthetic element in certain situations.
In some environments, this will matter much more than others. College campuses, public schools, and government buildings should be lit with fixtures that offer a design element that is complimentary to the geometric proportions and architectural style of the adjacent buildings. Retail stores require aesthetic architectural and parking lot lighting to attract customers. The only thing a person may see when they drive by is the parking lot, and decorative lighting fixtures that are professionally designed and finished with attractive colors will often be enough to catch a person’s eye.
Corporate headquarters often look much better and more professional with aesthetic or decorative parking lights in the very front of the building where investors, clients, and visitors are most likely to park. Warehouses and factories require the least amount of decoration, but still require their parking lights to look professional and presentable.

QUESTION:
Help with plant lighting in my living room?
My house does not have very many windows that capture great sun for my plants. My living room has white walls and a white ceiling. This has worked for a while for my 2 peace lily plants as they don’t need much light. However I have many plants that I am trying to keep alive…..christmas cacti (4 of them) spider plants, swedish ivy, and a few others that I have collected from different family members passing. ANYWAY….I love these plants and want to enjoy them! Is there a grow light that casts enough light to keep them healthy that I can put in a decorative light fixture and hang in my living room? The only things I have found are so powerful that it is scary or they come in ugly tacky set-ups. I don’t need anything big for fancy, just something to give the indirect sunlight a little extra boost during the day. If I don’t do something soon, I’m going to start losing them…..-

Home Lighting
Trends In Home Lighting. From Necessity To Decorative Accessory.
During the earliest times of recorded history, lighting was considered a practical necessity. In today’s terminology, this is called task lighting. When a particular area of a cave or shed or cabin needed lighting to cook or eat a meal, that’s where the lighting was placed. Little, if any concern was given to the aesthetic appeal of lighting and the concept of decorative lighting wasn’t even born.
With the advent of modern technology and the ability to design and manufacture lighting fixtures in all kinds of styles, sizes and shapes to say nothing of materials used, indoor and outdoor lighting has taken on an additional dimension. Perhaps the best way to describe this dimension is aesthetic or decorating appeal. Homeowners have discovered that the right kind of lighting can transform a humdrum home into a showplace.
Gone are the days when redecorating focused on just picking the right furniture, deciding on the best type of floor covering and what kind of cabinets to install. Lighting fixtures have been added to the mix and the part they play in creating just the right impression cannot be understated.
The goal in selecting the right lighting is to consider the way you want the room to feel when you walk in. Rooms that are places to rest and visit with others need to feel inviting and warm. A den, for example should feel cozy and intimate. Kitchens should have lighting that is functional and makes the preparation of a meal easy. The dining area should have lighting that exudes warmth and comfort. The bedrooms should have understated lighting that leaves the impression of intimacy. Give serious thought to the effect you want to create in a room when considering the lighting that you will be using.
Joe Rey-Barreau, an architect and professor of interior design at the University of Kentucky has identified three major trends in the selection of indoor lighting. He states “…decorative lighting is probably the most important accessory you can buy.” These trends have developed as a result of the wide variety of lighting styles and configurations available in today’s marketplace and can be summarized this way:
• Casual elegance: The creation of warm, relaxed and comfortable environments with casual lighting that is a little more upscale in design.
• Simplified traditional: Remove the excess and simplify. Decorative lighting here may be solid brass, but stripped down and rich with antique patina.
• Soft contemporary: Clean, modern and simple in style. While architectural in design, these fixtures are no longer cold.
A major consideration in selecting lighting fixtures is the basic architectural configuration of the home. Today’s builders are opting for taller and loftier ceilings. The standard in years past was an 8’ ceiling. Architects determined that the 8’ ceiling created a closed-in or somewhat confining impression. Visit most new housing developments today and the models will typically have up to 10’ ceilings in most of the main rooms. Consequently, lighting fixtures have been designed to complement these rooms with tall ceilings.
In the kitchen and dining areas, oak cabinets have traditionally been the standard. The trend has shifted towards deeper and richer wood such as cherry. As a result, the lighting used in these areas needs to be carefully chosen to enhance the wood used in the cabinets by giving them a richer look.
In addition, there has been a trend to return to metal as the primary material used in the construction of lighting fixtures. Copper and brass fixtures are becoming more and more popular replacing plastics and synthetics as primary construction material for lighting fixtures.
The mini-pendant is becoming more popular as is under-cabinet lighting.
Outdoor lighting is one of the hottest lighting trends today. Many more homes are being built with decks and patios which require lighting. The lighting industry has responded by designing weather-resistant and corrosion-resistant fixtures for outdoor use in a variety of styles, sizes and colors. In addition to deck and patio lighting, more modern landscape lighting has become available. Homeowners have begun to realize the immense curb appeal that is created by selecting just the right type of landscape lighting to say nothing of the added security that this type of lighting provides.
Finally, energy efficiency is coming more and more to the forefront as a major concern in the development of lighting fixtures. The fluorescent bulb is rapidly taking the place of the traditional incandescent bulb, which is not only wasteful when it comes to energy but also is developing a reputation for polluting the environment. The fluorescent fixture lasts longer than its incandescent counterpart and so is more economical to use.
The American Lighting Association (ALA) offers some tips that are worth repeating here.
Ten Tips that Will Help You Light Your Home Up Like the Pros
To help you make the most of your decorative lighting, the experts at the American Lighting Association (ALA) offer the following ideas for illuminating your home — no matter what your budget.
Don’t Wait: It is important to plan your lighting even earlier than other decorating ideas because there are frequently decisions that need to be made relative to the location and type of electrical outlet installation during construction. You also need to consider lead-time. “Consumers are surprised when we tell them it may be as long as six weeks to get their decorative fixture,” says Kathy Held, who is a buyer and vice president at South Dade Lighting in Miami, Florida. “We don’t keep every fixture in every finish in the showroom. Consumers need to start earlier and have patience while their fixture is built.”
Take Your Time: Give lighting as much consideration as other decorating decisions like flooring, wall covering, and furniture. Create a master plan of how you want the finished house to look, and work at it over a year or two. For instance, do you want mini-pendants versus recessed lighting over the kitchen island, pinpoint spots versus a wall outlet to illuminate artwork, or a floor outlet for a lamp in your seating area?
Ask the Experts: To make the best decisions, embrace your lighting showroom personnel. Get information from them. “And bring them information,” says Joe Rey-Barreau, educational consultant for the American Lighting Association. “Use your camera. Bring a digital image of the room and what is not working. If you are trying to create a decorative element, bring in swatches of fabric, pillows, and paint chips. Make the fixture the statement to complement the room.”
Quality Counts: No matter what your budget, opt for timeless materials like bronze and glass over their plastic counterparts. Timeless designs in top materials will always look right and can become family heirlooms.
Test It: Try before you buy. In most instances, you can take a lamp home, try it and bring it back if it doesn’t work.
Focus Pocus: Put lighting to work creating focal points. Add lights to direct the eye in a new direction by focusing on a piece of art, furniture or the mantel.
Dim Some: Dimmers are an inexpensive trick-of-the-trade. They help set a special mood in the home by allowing you to manipulate the light. Install them at the wall for ceiling fixtures and even buy them for table lamps.
Space Case: Add more drama to a space with accent lighting. By illuminating the top of a bookcase, adding under-cabinet lighting or hanging a colored pendant over the kitchen island, you can create islands of light that bring the grain of the wood, the print of the wallpaper or the color of a wall to life.
Do Your Homework: “There is a wealth of information on the Internet, particularly the ALA Web site,” says Rey-Barreau. “You should also rely on lighting showroom people as experts — many are interior designers.”

QUESTION:
How much will it cost to install a high quality home lighting system in my home?
I have seen professional home lighting systems in other peoples’ homes that are quite impressive. I know the equipment cannot be expensive since they are mostly lights integrated into the ceiling, but installation must be pricey. How much does the whole thing usually go for?-
ANSWER:
well that depends on what kind of lighting system you are talking about. One extreme would be like a integrated lutron system where the lights can do things like account for the amount of sun light in the room and automatically dime. Or are you talking about just some fancy fixtures that could make the inside of you home look brand new. either way the equipment can be pricey, I did custom lighting design. Many of the things that i have designed you can find in a IKEA catalog but i have done a few ,000 chandeliers. So with that been said the equipment all depends on what you want. now the electrician on the other hand is a little more strait forward, they will charge about 0 per hour. If you are talking about one of those fancy systems that could be up to 40 hours. Simply changing out some light fixtures will be about half a hour each. I know that this wasn’t that definite answer that you where looking for but I hope I helped get you started.

QUESTION:
What are recommendations for Automating Home Lighting in an as-built home?
I have looked at Insteon, X-10 and HAI products, but would like to know if any can be installed in a home where the lighting is all pre-wired in the cieling (recessed lights)What I have is several rooms where my builder wired up to 10 wall/cieling lights to one switch. I would like to separate some of them and put dimmers on others. Is it possible to use the Insteon type relays to automate individual lights?
-
ANSWER:
We use X10 in our house. What you want is several in-line modules that you put in the ceiling between the light fixture and the wiring. You’d need one for each fixture. We have one in our kitchen. They work best where you can leave the basic wall switch intact and leave it on all the time, controlling the various lights in the room with a wireless wall switch or switches. (We have also found that they are not as reliable if you replace the original wall switch with a dimming switch or an X10 switch. Something to do with the interrupted circuit, I think.) Anyway, once you have the modules in place, you can get the wireless wall switches that include a dimming switch which will dim the last light turned on. (We also have this in our kitchen and are able to dim the pendant lights over our island counter top).

QUESTION:
Can I Use my Computer UPS as Inverter UPS for my Home lighting, By connecting to a car battery?
I have a 600 VA computer UPS which has internal 12V 7.5Ah Dry Battery. I wish to remove that battery and connect a car battery (88Ah). Will it work for home lighting? i dont bother about backup time. I just want will it work or not?-
ANSWER:
Yes it will work.
Only caveat is you have to be careful not to under/overcharge the car battery. UPS has a built-in charger delivering about 1-2 Amps so if your battery is fully discharged, it will take forever to recharge. You might need external charger with higher current capacity. On the other hand, you will need to be careful not to spill acid all the time. Good luck.

Fluorescent Light Fixture Parts
What is Fluorescent Lighting?
Understanding how fluorescent light tubes work begins with a basic understanding of how light is produced. The basic unit of light is the light photon, which is released by an atom when its electrons become energized. As you may know, electrons are negatively charged particles that orbit around an atom’s positively charged nucleus. Electrons have different levels of energy, and move when energy is gained or lost by the atom. When heat passes energy to an atom, electrons quickly shift to another orbital, and almost instantaneously jump back to their original positions. As the return jump takes place, extra energy can be released in the form of a light photon, thus creating light.
We have all heard that fluorescent bulbs are more efficient than incandescent ones, but why? Fluorescent bulbs utilize a more energy efficient process of producing the light that we see. The main difference between incandescent lighting and fluorescent lighting is in the process of stimulating the atoms. Incandescent light bulbs excite atoms through the introduction of heat, resulting in an excess of unused heat energy. Fluorescent light bulbs, on the other hand, utilize a chemical reaction to excite atoms without the same excess heat energy. Both types of bulbs create ultraviolet light, which is not visible to humans. But only fluorescent bulbs utilize a substance that converts the ultraviolet light to visible light, resulting in less wasted energy.

QUESTION:
How to fault detect a bad fluorescent light fixture?
A few of my under counter fluorescent fixtures in the kitchen don’t work. they are all less than 3 years old. I replace the light bulb, but it still doesn’t light. How do you test what part of the fixture has failed- ie the ballast, a connection, etc-
ANSWER:
It is actually quite uncommon to find flourescent fixtures that use starters anymore unless they are very old. If the fixture is that old it would most likely be cost effective to simple replace the fixture. Starters are not expensive, but may be difficult to find and there are more energy efficient fixtures on the market today that also offer more pleasing light colors. If your fixture is newer and doesnt have a starter or even if it does have a starter there will be a ballast and this is the most likely reason for failure or the light to come on. A ballast is simply a transformer that boosts your household voltage to a voltage that is needed to cause the gas inside the tube to “burn”. Standard mechanical ballasts will eventually wear out. This is often evidenced by visually inspecting the ballast where you will often times find a black tarry substance leaking from the case of the ballast. The ballast, by the way, will be located inside the cover of the fixture, it is not exposed. Newer flourescent fixtures will have an electronic ballast that often will look like a small printed circuit board like that as you may find in a radio.
If you feel comfortable replacing the ballast it is a fairly simple procedure. First be absolutely sure that you have turned the circuit off before attempting to replace a ballast. Simply turning the light switch off is not good enough. You can check to see that the circuit is off by testing with a circuit tester that does not require live contact. These are available at hardware stores. The tester will “chirp” if voltage is present. Also once you think the circuit is off, check with a “wiggy” tester, also available from a hardware store. This tester requires live contact with the wiring. Always check your testers on a known live outlet before proceeding to the circuit in question to ensure that the tester works properly. Once you are sure the circuit is turned off you can proceed with replacing the ballast. It is a simple process of disconnecting the wires from the faulty ballast and removing it then install the new ballast matching the colors of the wires. To make sure that you purchase the correct ballast you can either look at the label of the old ballast or tell the clerk at the store about your fixture. Is it an 8 foot, 2 tube fixture or a 4 foot 4 tube, 18 inch single tube fixture, just let the clerk know. Again consider that if the fixture is old just replacing the entire fixture.
Warning: You have been told to be sure the circuit is off before working on the fixture. Household current can be DEADLY if you come into contact with it. If you do not understand how to use a circuit tester or are at all uncomfortable with working with electricity call an electrician. This type of repair is quite inexpensive and you will be certain that the job is done right and safely. I will assume NO responsibility if you decide to perform this repair yourself. Often times it is much less costly to hire a professional than to put yourself at risk.

QUESTION:
How do I replace a fluorescent light with 3 recessed lights?
I have a fluorescent light in my kitchen that I need to get rid of. I’ve read up about adding recessed lights and they all say “run the power source to the light.” Okay, but I’d like to get rid of the fluorescent, and swap it with 3 new recessed lights. I’ve also read when you replace lights to make sure you don’t go over the current wattage. As it is now, there are two 40W fluorescent bulbs. I’d like to replace them with 3 60W energy saving bulbs, so it would actually be 14W each (42W total). So finally my question is: can I simply kill power to the room, disconnect the electrical line from the fluorescent, remove the fluorescent fixture, put three recessed lights in the same vicinity, split the electrical cable into 3 parts (3 red & 3 white), and connect that to my 3 new lights? Is that doable or is there something I’m not understanding.
Thank you for the help.
-
ANSWER:
You got it. Usually the wire will be black and white rather than red, but you are understanding it ok. Your wattage is fine. With the wire that is there you can even go bigger on the bulbs with no problem. 14 ga wire will handle 1400 watts total and that is the smallest wire used in home wiring. So even 3 100 watt bulbs would be fine. You are correct in your wiring. Make sure your connections are tight. Tug each wire to make sure it will not slip out of the wire nut.

QUESTION:
fluorescent light fixture and side effects on eyes?
hi, I have a fluorescent light fixture at my apartment unit and it’s situated right above my laptop monitor and is the only light I depend on that lights up my kitchen. I am okay with it all this time but when I did a little research on “fluorescent lighting” I came across some articles mentioning how it can affect the macula (part of the retina) in a negative way in the long run…not sure if that’s true or not…I am paranoid perhaps so I decided to put a plastic bag covering it but I only taped the sides of it so there’s still air that can reach the light because my mom was always telling me how electric things can’t over heat or it will be dangerous? Somehow, it does feel like some of the strong glare is temporarily blocked and maybe that’s good? This won’t cause any hazards will it? This light is already nailed in to the walls so it will be hard to remove it and place it somewhere else…hopefully this isn’t a dumb question.-
ANSWER:
You should not put a plastic bag over it. Maybe you could wear a hat like a ball cap when you are working at the computer to protect your eyes from the glare. I have to do that sometimes because of how my windows are located.

QUESTION:
Is it feasible to replace my fluorescent tube fixtures with the newer compact fluorescent light fixtures?
I have some fluorescent tube fixtures that need new ballast and some that need new bulbs. Before I purchase the replacement parts, I was wondering if would be simpler to to just buy new CFL fixtures and convert all of the tubes to CFC. There are 6 fluorescent tube fixtures in my basement which would be replaced.I know it would probably save on power, but how much light loss or lumen’s would I lose in the process?
To add to this: My six current fixtures are 4′ T12 fluorescent fixtures, 2 tubes per fixture.
My primary goal was not to save power, but to get out of the hassle of buying new ballasts and lugging the tubes around. As some below have mentioned aesthetics would be improved with the CFL’s, but at the cost of lumen’s though.-
ANSWER:
40 W. T-12 fluorescent lamps put out about ~3000 lumens of light.
A 100W equivalent CFL (~23W.) puts out ~ 1000 lumens.
You would need six per fixture to maintain the installed light level.
The fixture pans and pin mounts are already there.
You would do far better in cost, labor, and efficiency to buy the new lamps and ballasts.
You can buy the newer T-8 electronic ballasts and lamps if you wish.
They’ll fit.

QUESTION:
Fluorescent vs. incandescent stairway fixture?
I’m going to add two stairway light fixtures on the top part of my ceiling for accent lighting (movie room). I have install a dimmer switch (I know I can’t use this with a fl. bulb). Was wondering which would be a better choice for the price and lighting needs. I’d really like to go with the fluorescent, but the dimming feature is always nice. Plus, I figure eventually compact fl. bulbs will be dim-able or LED. Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!-
ANSWER:
a fluorescent dimmer can only be used with the lamps listed on that dimmer. with incandescant you can use any light as long as you don’t excede the wattage of the dimmer. if money isn’t an issue go with fluorescent. as said it will shorten bulb life on fluorescent.
